The journey proceeds on well until we pass Kericho when it suddenly picks up speed... I am strategically seated next to the conductor just one row away from the driver and I can clearly see the dashboard. I notice that the driver does about 140 to 160 kilometres per hour on most sections of the road between Kericho and Kedowa town, which is well past the recommended speed of 80kph... Meanwhile I engage the conductor, who all this time appears so cool as though nothing is amiss in a conversation about their work. It is then that I receive the rude shock. The conductor tells me that they make two trips between Busia and Nairobi - more than 1,400km - in just 18 hours. As if it is nothing out of the ordinary, the conductor proceeds to narrate to me how the crew including the driver have just a little more than 15 minutes to rest before they embark on the next journey...

A vote taken by the Rochester Genesee Regional Transportation Authority board of commissioners this week unanimously approved the switch to ultra-low sulfur diesel fuel... The change — which will affect all 225 public buses and the nearly 28,000 gallons of fuel they burn every week — should be complete by October, said Jacquie Halldow, director of communications for the authority... Standard diesel has 500 parts per million of sulfur, which serves as a lubricant but is responsible for pollutants that lead to acid rain, high ozone levels and smog. Ultra-low sulfur diesel can have no more than 15 ppm of sulfur...
