Asheville,NC,USA -The Asheville Citizen/Times, by Joel Burgess, -August 13, 2006: — Residents and merchants call the new bus stop at the corner of Livingston and Depot streets a “work of art.”... This year, City Council boosted the public transit budget 12 percent. Most of the $480,483 increase — $305,000 — went to the routes and other new programs, including a 90-day ride-for-free period beginning Monday and a “passport” program in which businesses and educational institutions pay fares for employees and students... They argue that public transit has direct but less apparent benefits in reducing problems of modern urbanization, including traffic congestion, air pollution and sprawl. These problems, they say, have their own costs...
