Figures * USA - PSTA ridership up as gas prices rise
County residents now turning to mass transit, even bicycles to get around
Pinellas County,FL,USA -The Tampa Bay Newspapers (Seminole,FL), by THOMAS MICHALSKI -9 June 2006: -- Ridership on Pinellas Suncoast Transit Authority bus routes climbed by nearly 6 percent while passengers transporting bicycles rose by an astounding 50 percent, mainly due to the constantly escalating prices of gasoline... Rick Butler, a Pinellas Park city councilman and member of the PSTA board of directors, said in April 2006 860,581 people rode PSTA buses. The figure rose to 911,546 this past April, the last month for which statistics are available... “That represents a 5.9 percent increase in passengers,” Butler said. “It’s mainly due to the ever rising cost of gasoline that has peaked at $3-per-gallon”...
