BUS SERVICES* USA - Bay Metro's ridership is up, despite having fewer routes

"Gas prices are crazy, man," he says, offering up his reasoning. "It's just been convenient catching a bus. I ride it almost every day now"

MI,USA -MLive.com/The Bay City Times, by Ryan J. Stanton -February 04, 2008: -- ... It's been more than two years since major cuts went into effect at the Bay Metropolitan Transportation Authority, Bay County's taxpayer-supported public transit system... But many riders haven't even noticed they're getting any lesser service... Reports obtained by The Times show that significant cutbacks made in 2005 are working out in a big way. In fact, ridership is higher than it's been in the last decade - partly a sign of a slow economy, officials say... Despite cutting back more than 8,200 hours of service and nearly 129,000 route miles traveled, Bay Metro annual rider figures are up by about 30,000 rides over the past two years... Bay Metro Transit had 30,000 more fares in 2007 than in 2005 (610,980 from 580,982) despite cutting routes and staff... (Photo by Alexander Cohn/Times: David Payne, right, watches Dave Andrews board the #7 bus at Meijer Friday morning. "I ride the bus every day," said fellow rider Jeannie Smith of Bay City.
