Efficiency - USA - Port Authority's poses budget dilemma
Allegheny,Pittsburgh,PEN,USA -Pittsburgh Live/Tribune Review, by Jim Ritchie -Dec 7, 2005: -- The Port Authority of Allegheny County generates more money per passenger on its buses than other transit agencies of its size, but despite efficient operations appears poised for financial trouble in late 2006 when it will face a $45 million deficit... The Port Authority has successfully cut costs and generated fares... Now, there's little the agency can do to resolve the financial crunch coming next year. The state gave $45 million to help the authority balance its current $319 million budget... Roddey said the agency might one day have to consider seeking competitive private contracts to lower costs, as other agencies have done... The concept was rejected by labor leaders during recent negotiations for bus drivers and mechanics. The three-year agreement brokered with the help of Rendell and county Chief Executive Dan Onorato did not include privatizing routes...
