* Against the "BUS BUNCHING" - USA: In Houston, Texas: ** Too, PAYING FARES with Smartphone
* Texas - Metro tries a High-Tech Way to keep buses running on time
-- “Bus Bunching” is a common complaint for many transit riders. That’s when buses get off-schedule and follow each other on the same route... A bus in Houston can easily get stopped at a railroad crossing or maybe it loses time because of detours. Then you have a situation where the next bus is following directly behind it... To keep buses evenly spaced, Metro’s Tom Lambert says they’re now trying computer-aided dispatch. They’re doing it at Houston Transtar, the region’s traffic control center... They’re now using the computer dispatch system on Houston’s busiest route. That’s the 82 Westheimer, which has buses running every six minutes during peak periods... After testing the system on Westheimer, Lambert says they’ll look to expand to all the city’s high-frequency routes...

* Texas - Houston transit riders could soon have a new option for paying their fare
-- Metro is currently testing a mobile ticketing app that would allow riders to purchase single fare tickets and day passes... Metro has enlisted volunteers to test a new mobile ticketing app... If you’re a regular transit rider, you’ve probably found yourself in a situation where just can’t scrape up that last nickel. Or maybe you’ve forgotten your Q-Card... But what if you could pay for all your transit trips by smartphone? ... They’re already doing it in Austin and Dallas. Now Houston riders could soon enjoy the same convenience...

TECHNO BUSES * EUROPE: Driveless buses
* Italy - Sardinia Island, trial two electric buses
-Busworld -16 Aug 2014: -- Europe’s first driverless bus trial has started on the Italian island of Sardinia. Co-funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme, the demonstrations are led by the City Mobil 2 project (CM2), which is testing automated vehicles (AVs) in real-life urban environments... The two driverless electric buses, which can take up to 12 passengers each, have been provided by Robosoft and are being piloted on a busy pedestrianized seafront promenade in Oristano. The buses are guided by a differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and have three levels of safety: two laser scanners on the front that detect obstacles within 30m (98ft); ultrasound detectors on the front and the sides that recognise obstacles, even if they are not in the vehicle’s direct trajectory; and a mechanical device that forces a stop in an emergency. Italian law requires that a human ‘supervisor’ is present on board and is capable of taking command of the vehicle if required. Despite the automation, a driver/supervisor provided by the region’s public transport operator travels on the vehicle and has a console with which they can override the autonomous systems and take control of the vehicle. The operator also provides assistance and information to the passengers, as well as collecting travel data, which will be used for further statistical analysis...

* DC - Federal subsidies have inspired some silly transit projects
(Photo: A streetcar named desire)
Washington,DC,USA -The Economist -Aug 9th 2014: -- Late and over budget, streetcars are finally rumbling to life in Washington, DC. The long-awaited service, which has cost at least $135m to build, spans 2.4 miles along H Street in the city’s north-east. But it is not taking passengers yet. Operators are still learning how to drive the electric trains, which may come into service by the end of the year. In the meantime, locals can hop on the bus: plenty of them already ply this route, and often at a faster clip... Commuters have long preferred cars and buses...Labels: passengers transports industry

(Ultan Courtney told the transport committee that capital investment was a priority)
Dublin,Ireland -RTE News -23 September 2014: -- Dublin Bus has implemented costs savings totalling more than €60m a year, but significant challenges still remain for the company, according to Chairman-Designate Ultan Courtney... He said while the company was now heading for a more stable financial position, the careful and prudent management of the limited financial resources available remain a top priority for management... Mr Courtney said the company will be focusing on the ageing of the bus fleet, the nature and size of the Government subvention, giving customers value for money, and securing value for money from suppliers... Mr Courtney said Dublin Bus had had a very difficult few years, and that management had worked hard to make the most of the revenues available to it...Labels: passengers transports industry

* Northern Ireland: Bus safety fears as one in four found 'unroadworthy'
Belfast,NI,UK -The Belfast Telegraph, by JOANNE SWEENEY –24 Sept 2014: -- One in four buses in Northern Ireland are unroadworthy or in breach of licensing regulations, teachers have been told, just a day after 45 pupils narrowly escaped death in a terrifying road crash... Teachers have been urged to stop children going on school trips if buses do not provide a seat and belt for every child, a special event at Stormont heard yesterday... The timely message that there is a significant number of defective buses being used to transport schoolchildren came just hours after a bus carrying 45 secondary schoolchildren was in collision with a car on the main Drumquin to Omagh road in Co Tyrone...

(Picture by Ben Crabtree/The West Australian: Punctuality, passengers upset at late buses)
Perth,WA,Australia -The West Australian, by KENT ACOTT -September 24, 2014: -- Improving the punctuality of Perth's buses will be a key focus for public transport authorities over the next year... The Public Transport Authority's annual survey showed passengers were generally happy with bus, train and ferry services in Perth... But it also identified that passenger satisfaction with the punctuality of buses was at an all-time low - down from 82 per cent to 76 per cent. There was concern - particularly in Midland, Canning and Fremantle-Cockburn - that too many buses were running late or not running to their timed schedules... PTA spokesman David Hynes said buses, like all road vehicles, could be delayed by congestion... He said the survey would prompt a new focus to improve bus punctuality...Labels: passengers transports industry

The bus journey between the two urban centres is one of the world’s longest and requires passengers to spend more than three days on the road... Brazilian coach company Nossa Senhora de Penha sees achieving this goal as an exciting challenge. The company undertakes the journey – the longest in its schedule – once a week. A Scania bus chassis and bodywork by Marcopolo, featuring folding seats that can be converted to beds, ensure total comfort for passengers... * Bogota reduces emissions and costs with electric buses
(Video from you Tube -Mar 20, 2013: Introducing the BYD Electric Bus conducted to test its viability as a feeder system Transmilenio in Bogota, Colombia)
Bogota,COL -The Southern Pacific Review -10 Aug 2014: ... Bogotá is moving towards the final stages of its transition to a Transantiago-type system for public transport. This is where the city makes direct payments to the bus companies that provide transportation for the city instead of having private operators operate outside some overriding agency... In Bogotá today you can see many private buses that are not part of the Transmilenio system. Most of these are older vehicles that do not come anywhere close to the Euro V emission standards, which is the current emission standard there. A Volvo manager we talked to there said that most of those older buses are Euro 0 emissions standards, which has no limits at all on the particulate matter (PM) pollution... The city of Bogotá has already taken delivery of 231 hybrid diesel-electric hybrid buses from Volvo and is buying 790 more. But the city has also decided to use zero emissions all-electric vehicles and is taking delivery of 40 of those from the Chinese company BYD. The first order is for 40, 12-meter, 60-passenger vehicles. The next order will include the 18 meter, articulated buses, or those larger buses that have a flexible section in the middle...

Work will begin on Sunday on a project to remove at least eight bus stops from Sydney's inner west – an early stage of a government agenda to cut the number of stops across the city... Transport for NSW has a long-term aim to speed up buses through Sydney by scheduling services that stop at fewer locations... * Florida - Palm Beach County buses get green lights in order to run on time
(Photo: West Palm Beach intermodal transfer facility bus transfer)
Palm Beach,FL,USA -The Sun Sentinel, by Angel Streeter -August 9, 2014: -- People who rely on public transportation to get to work and school need buses that run on time... To make sure that happens, Palm Beach County will soon try out a system that keeps traffic signals green for buses long enough for them to get through an intersection, allowing bus drivers to shave a few minutes off their routes. Officials are estimating that the time it takes to drive an entire route can be reduced by 5 to 10 percent... Along those routes, traffic signals will pick up that a bus is coming their way and either turn green more quickly if the light is red or stay on green longer if the light is green... But this won't happen with all buses. The system will only be used if buses are running late... But some bus riders who regularly use Palm Tran, the county's bus system, are skeptical. Sommer Pytel thinks the quick fix at intersections skirts the real problems with the bus system: It doesn't have enough buses that run more often...

(Photo: Man shot and killed on MBTA bus 2/13)
Boston,MASS,USA -The Blackstonian, by Jamarhl Crawford -August 8, 2014: -- The plan to transport children in 6th, 7th and 8th grades to Boston Public Schools is not a good one. Sure, the BPS already has had students who arrive to school via the MBTA and that is not a great idea either... We’ve all seen it, the unruly teenagers who invade the MBTA in youthful stampedes at the end of school... Another disturbing trend I have noticed is with the young ladies. As their bodies are changing and we have all noticed that children are developing faster these days, perhaps it is modern fashion or lack of proper adult supervision, but there are far too many young ladies who are attempting to emulate the wonderful examples of Beyonce and Rihanna... With sex trafficking what it is, public transportation is a perfect place for an adult predator to meet an innocent young girl, perhaps even follow her home and learn her routine. Perverts on the T are so prevalent that a law was recently passed to penalize “Up Skirt” photos...

The Lafayette Transit System is working on a smartphone app that would allow riders to check the status of a bus, one of several changes underway or planned for the city-owned bus service... Mitchell said city-parish staff is working in-house on the smartphone app, which would tie into a GPS tracking system already in place for city buses... In 2013, an estimated 60 million people traveled on the bus system through the Regional Transportation Commission — it’s the nation’s 17th busiest transit system... Fares range from $2 for a single ride to a 30-day pass at $65, but the stories people might hear from traveling on a Las Vegas bus can be priceless... Whether it’s adding signs and advertisements or adjusting issues on the bus, RTC Assistant General Manager, MJ Maynard, says, the RTC relies on its customers’ feedback... “Three years ago, we decided to take our public feedback to a new level,” Maynard says... Instead of assuming what the customers want, they decided to interact directly with people... “We do a formal survey every year,” she says. “If we make a change, we also try to go out and get people’s opinions by doing informal surveys. We have become more efficient from our feedback” ...
* Massachusets - Bridj brings Uber model to Boston buses
Boston, MASS,USA -The Boston Herald, by Jack Encarnacao -July 28, 2014: -- A new “pop-up” bus service called Bridj is applying for the same license every other Boston bus company holds, while maintaining it doesn’t need one to legally operate — a departure from the regulation-shunning approaches of transportation services like Uber and Haystack... Backed by $3 million in venture capital, Bridj creates temporary bus routes based on an analysis of demand, and partners with licensed coach bus vendors for pickups. Bridj began charging for its service last week after a six-week pilot run and receiving a state Department of Public Utilities charter, CEO Matthew George said... George said Cambridge-based Bridj has only applied for a “jitney license” — basically a permit to transport large groups of people — at the request of Boston officials, including Mayor Martin J. Walsh... According to Bridj’s license application, routes launch from Centre Street in Brookline and unload at 640 Boylston St., 100 Federal St. and 347 Congress St., and 250 Kendall St. in Cambridge. Grand Rapids,MICH,USA -MLive.com, by Andrew Krietz -July 23, 2014: -- Come August, city streets will sport buses noticeably different than those on The Rapid's core routes... Green and silver buses, splashed with varying hues of both colors, will go into operation Aug. 25 when The Rapid establishes its new Silver Line route. The fleet clearly is distinct from the bus system's standard vehicles as it serves a separate — yet complementary — purpose: moving people across the metropolitan area, officials say... The Silver Line fleet is an operation of 10 hybrid electric buses designed for the route it serves in addition to 34 stations, said Peter Varga, CEO of The Rapid. Branding initiatives — including colors, logos and station design — launched from the beginning to qualify as a bus rapid transit (BRT) system needing grant funding from federal sources... NY,USA -Crains New York, by BILL LIPTON and JEN HENSLEY -June 27, 2014: -- To connect thousands of New Yorkers to jobs in remote corners of the city, bus-rapid-transit with dedicated traffic lanes and platform-level boarding for riders to speed the trip, is the answer... 900,000 city residents commute more than an hour each way to work, mostly to jobs that pay less than $35,000 per year. Inaccessible subway stations and long, unreliable bus trips are facts of life in many areas... Simply put, New Yorkers deserve more from their mass transit system... The good news is that we have the building blocks to give it to them. On seven corridors across the city, select bus service (SBS) has been implemented by the city Department of Transportation and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. This service has reduced travel times and increased bus ridership. Along these corridors, SBS makes sense...
