* Karnakata / India - Electric buses daily earn 82 per cent more profit than diesel vehicles
-- Electric buses generate 27 percent more revenue and 82 percent more profits than diesel buses per day, according to an Indian Institute of Science (IISc) study evaluating electric vehicles for urban transport... The findings have special significance because primary mass transit in Indian cities is provided by 150,000 diesel buses, held responsible for contributing to urban smog and carbon emissions that are warming the planet... As much as 25 tonnes of carbon dioxide (CO2) emission can be cut every year for every diesel bus replaced by an electric bus, said the IISC study, conducted bySheela Ramasesha and her group at the Divecha Centre for Climate Change in Bengaluru... Diesel-powered buses and trucks contribute higher CO2 than lighter motor vehicles powered by petrol, a study in the journal Atmospheric Environment said in 2009... Despite the high initial investment, the absence of tailpipe exhaust fumes, silent running, and lower idling motor energy losses at bus stops or traffic signals could make the electric bus one of those technological options for urban India... * DC / USA - Accelerating zero-emission mass transit one EV bus order at a time
-- During the last ten years the United States has borne witness to a patchwork of federal transportation funding measures. But on December 4, 2015, President Obama signed into law the Fixing America’s Surface Transportation (FAST) Act, crystallizing a long-term investment future for manufacturers, infrastructure providers and public transit agencies alike. Backed by strong bipartisan support, the $305 billion surface transportation bill marks the first multi-year, fully-funded bill of its kind in over a decade, which sets the historical legislation in stark relief against years of inadequate funding... The law is of particular importance to the emerging zero-emission bus industry. Transit agencies will see an 89 percent increase of current funding levels for the Bus and Bus Facilities Program and bolstered investment in the Low or No Emission Vehicle Deployment (LoNo) Program... Lastly, the FAST Act enhances state transportation programs. For example,California transit agencies can take advantage of the state’s existingHybrid and Zero-Emission Truck and Bus Voucher Incentive Project (HVIP) and still lease batteries through the FAST Act, dramatically reducing upfront capital costs...

* What is a Hybrid bus?
Bangalore,India -Bangalore Mirror - Oct 17, 2014: -- A hybrid bus combines conventional internal combustion engine propulsion system with an electric propulsion system. The internal combustion engines are the ones that use petrol or diesel to power the vehicle. The electric propulsion system powers electric cars like Reva, and are becoming increasingly popular due to its non-polluting nature. * Diesel-electric hybrid: The propulsion uses diesel and electric motors together to power the vehicle. This ensures lesser consumption of diesel. * Diesel/electric hybrid: This propulsion uses either diesel or electric at any given time of driving. It helps keeping the other as back-up. Many such buses have been introduced by manufacturers in the US, UK, New Zealand and Japan, some claiming a cut in carbon dioxide emissions up to 31% and fuel savings of 40%.

* Italy - Sardinia Island, trialtwo electric buses
-Busworld -16 Aug 2014:-- Europe’s first driverless bus trial has started on the Italian island of Sardinia. Co-funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme, the demonstrations are led by the City Mobil 2 project (CM2), which is testing automated vehicles (AVs) in real-life urban environments... The two driverless electric buses, which can take up to 12 passengers each, have been provided by Robosoft and are being piloted on a busy pedestrianized seafront promenade in Oristano. The buses are guided by a differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and have three levels of safety: two laser scanners on the front that detect obstacles within 30m (98ft); ultrasound detectors on the front and the sides that recognise obstacles, even if they are not in the vehicle’s direct trajectory; and a mechanical device that forces a stop in an emergency. Italian law requires that a human ‘supervisor’ is present on board and is capable of taking command of the vehicle if required. Despite the automation, a driver/supervisor provided by the region’s public transport operator travels on the vehicle and has a console with which they can override the autonomous systems and take control of the vehicle. The operator also provides assistance and information to the passengers, as well as collecting travel data, which will be used for further statistical analysis...

* Electric Buses overall best for CO2, health & price; hydrogen worst
Clean Technica, by Mike Barnard -August 11th, 2014:-- Recently on CleanTechnica there have been a couple of excellent pieces on the challenges with hydrogen fuel cells for vehicles in general, but how would they be for urban transit buses specifically? It’s instructive to look at an apples-to-apples comparisons of diesel, electric trolley and hydrogen buses traveling 100 kilometres in the USA.
Hydrogen is the most expensive fuel for buses, and it’s not the lowest greenhouse gas choice either. There’s no good argument for hydrogen fuel cell buses except in deeply polluted cities with coal-only grids, and that niche is shrinking not growing... Diesel buses are the lowest greenhouse gas choice on average today, but the health impacts of diesel emissions in densely populated urban centres makes them a difficult choice, especially when urban areas are attempting to clean up their air... Electric trolley buses are the cheapest to operate, have much lower health impacts than diesel buses and are already the best choice for greenhouse gas emissions in 20% of the US states. They will only improve as the grid decarbonizes. The smart money is on electrification of urban buses...

That’s good for the environment, because it should reduce the number of cars on the road. But there’s one obvious drawback for those new residents — diesel buses are noisy and smelly, simultaneously enhancing and undermining livability wherever they go...TriMet is hoping to tap a new technology that could reduce that drawback: electric buses. Because they are propelled by electric motors, such buses are relatively quiet and emit no exhaust gases... TriMethas looked at two different kinds of electric buses in Portland. The first is made byBYD, a Chinese manufacturer... The second bus is made by Proterra, a Greenville, N.C., manufacturer. The company brought one of its electric buses to town last week, where it was displayed on Thursday at the downtown World Trade Centerwhere PGE — a strong supporter of electric vehicles — is headquarters. TriMetthen took it to one of their maintenance yards, where drivers and mechanics examined it... TriMet saysBYD buseshave the potential to substantially reduce operating cost savings, not only compared to its 40-foot diesel buses, but also compared to hybrid and compressed natural gas-powered buses on the market... BYD buses normally take two to four hours to recharge. But WAVE produces a supplemental charging system that will allow the buses to slightly recharge while in use...Proterra uses a different charging system — an elevated docking device that connects to the top of the bus and fully recharges its batteries in mere minutes... Proterra’snew bus costs $825,000, almost twice as much as an equivalent diesel bus. The recharging docks cost an additional $600,000...
