WOW!!! Now: ... 3D-printed buses * USA: They're are self-driving, and re-usable

* Arizona - Olli, the autonomous mini-bus that can be manufactured in a few hours

--- After introducing the world’s first-ever 3D-printed car, Arizona-based startup Local Motors is pushing a new mode of public transport system onto the US roads – 3D-printed buses that are self-driving, and re-usable... The 12-seater mini-bus, called Olli, can be booked through mobile apps. More interestingly, riders can customize Olli ride to their requirements. Once done, they can have the mini-bus in around 10 hours’ time; the time required to 3D-print and assemble the vehicles from company’s micro-factories. The manufacturers say the regulations don’t impose any restriction to this 3D-printed mini-bus for making its debut run... According to the manufacturers, the technology is more than ready for its commercial performance, and the real complexity now lies in ‘fielding’ Olli, i.e. to roll out the vehicle in a matter of hours to the riders. The entire process of 3D-printing the mini-bus parts gets completed in 10 hours, and it takes another one hour for its assembling... Micro-factories for the production of Olli are currently setup in Washington, and that’s where Olli will be making its debut. The introductory event took place in National Harbor, Washington D.C. on Thursday. Trial runs are expected to be carried out in the months ahead, and it will be followed by the expansion to cities like Las Vegas and Miami... The company is also eyeing global expansion to cities like Berlin, Copenhagen and Canberra. Local Motors John Rogers shares the view that over 100 micro-factories will have to be setup around the globe for the production of Olli mini-bus...

TECHNO BUSES * USA: Detroit's ones

* Michigan - Detroit to receive 80 new buses this year; launch smartphone app to track arrival times

Detroit,MICH,USA -Metro Times, by Ryan Felton -Jan 9, 2015: -- News about public transit in this region typically doesn't draw a positive response, but this should, especially considering the frigid plunge in temperatures we've experienced in recent days: Over the coming months, the Detroit Department of Transportation (DDOT) will receive 80 new buses to upgrade its antiquated fleet; the first seven are expected to arrive in the next couple of weeks... The city says 10 of the buses from the fresh fleet will be longer, 60-foot articulated buses that provide additional capacity on DDOT's busiest routes. The other 70 will be standard 40-foot buses...
Besides the new "DDOT Bus" provides a smartphone app, which will provide real-time locations of buses and the arrival time of a bus at the riders' stop. The app, available on iPhone and Android devices, tracks buses using GPS technology, something every DDOT bus has... Those without a smartphone can use DDOT's "Text My Bus" program to find out where their bus is located at any given time. To use that, send a text message that only includes the cross streets of your current location to 50464, and a response will be sent with prompts to get specific information pertaining to routes and buses...

SELF DRIVING BUSES ? * USA

Self-driving buses could really reinvent transportation systems

(Photo: London Bus Lightspeed)
London,EN,UK -Clean Technica, by Cynthia Shahan -November 9, 2014: -- Congested cities, troubling unemployment due to the absence of transit, and environmental issues from automobile pollution all point towards the need for much greater development of mass transportation. Even as transit ridership is growing to all time highs, the USA is short on extensively developed systems that reach the many who could benefit from affordable transit... Lindsey and Townsend continue that rather than cars, self-driving buses might be on an avenue of increasing change. They may change perceptions. “Now what if those buses—like the private automobile “platoons” envisioned by the auto industry—could travel safely only feet apart at top speeds?” ... Quartz points out a study and recent estimate for Princeton University indicating that with autonomous buses “the bus lanes of the Lincoln Tunnel, connecting New York City to New Jersey, could accommodate over 200,000 passengers per hour, more than five times today’s throughput” ...

TECHNO BUSES * EUROPE: Driveless buses

* Italy - Sardinia Island, trial two electric buses

-Busworld -16 Aug 2014: -- Europe’s first driverless bus trial has started on the Italian island of Sardinia. Co-funded by the EU’s Seventh Framework Programme, the demonstrations are led by the City Mobil 2 project (CM2), which is testing automated vehicles (AVs) in real-life urban environments... The two driverless electric buses, which can take up to 12 passengers each, have been provided by Robosoft and are being piloted on a busy pedestrianized seafront promenade in Oristano. The buses are guided by a differential Global Positioning System (DGPS) and have three levels of safety: two laser scanners on the front that detect obstacles within 30m (98ft); ultrasound detectors on the front and the sides that recognise obstacles, even if they are not in the vehicle’s direct trajectory; and a mechanical device that forces a stop in an emergency. Italian law requires that a human ‘supervisor’ is present on board and is capable of taking command of the vehicle if required. Despite the automation, a driver/supervisor provided by the region’s public transport operator travels on the vehicle and has a console with which they can override the autonomous systems and take control of the vehicle. The operator also provides assistance and information to the passengers, as well as collecting travel data, which will be used for further statistical analysis...

* England - London buses are about to get smarter

London,EN,UK -Tech Digest, by James O'Malley -June 23, 2014: -- Transport for London (TfL) is currently testing a couple of new techie innovations in buses: live maps to show you where you are, and impressively/terrifyingly, a display showing how many seats are free upstairs... TfL seem to be working on making the bus experience (marginally) better. According to IanVisits, a couple of clever innovations is on the way... Firstly, buses could soon be getting screens mounted at the bottom of the stairs that show a map and the real time location of the bus. Using data from Open Street Map, it'll also display the names and locations of the next few stops, and how long it will take for the bus to get there... Not only will this be great for tourists, but it should reduce the feeling for seasoned Londoners visiting an unfamiliar part of the city of going on a mystery tour... The other innovation is both clever and potentially disturbing: These same screens could soon apparently be showing the number of free seats on the upper deck, to save you the trip up top if it is full...

TECHNO BUSES * Switzerland: TOSA electric bus

* Switzerland - Battery-topped electric buses flash charge in 15 seconds

(Video from YouTube: A TOSA bus in service at a charging station. These electric buses can charge up at a stop in the amount of time it takes for passengers to get on and off)
Geneva,Switzerland -CNET, by Amanda Kooser -June 16, 2014: -- Electric buses are coveted for quietly keeping emissions out of the air. Many of these big vehicles hook into an overhead power line to keep them running. Those lines are unsightly and can require a lot of infrastructure work to install. You could get rid of overhead power lies by running buses solely on batteries, but it's a challenge keeping those batteries charged for long days of operation... The TOSA (Trolleybus Optimisation Système Alimentation) pilot project is testing electric buses with an unusual method for keeping charged up. The articulated bus has a battery pack on top of the vehicle. When it pulls into certain stations, it connects through a robotic arm to what is essentially an electric bus dock. A 15-second rapid flash charge helps to keep the buses running all day... Getting to this test phase required the use of a complex mathematical model that takes into account variables ranging from the cost of batteries to the placement of recharging stations to electricity rates. The pilot project acts as a real-life proof for the concepts behind TOSA. Geneva is the first city expected to adopt a TOSA bus line as part of its regular service, with a start date sometime in 2017...

* USA - NG truck, bus sales forecast to double by 2019. Propane Autogas Vehicles

Boulder,CO,USA -Pike Research -September 13, 2012: -- A new report from the clean energy analyst Pike Research, forecasts steady growth in the market for natural gas (CNG and LNG) trucks and buses... Autogas is the term most commonly used in the market for liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) used as an automotive transport fuel, and it represents approximately 9% of the global consumption of LPG. While LPG is relatively clean-burning, easy to store and transport, has high energy content, and is widely available in many countries, supplies of natural gas have become much more abundant over the last few years as new extraction process have been developed, and natural gas now challenges autogas as an alternative vehicle fuel to gasoline and diesel...  Some OEMs offer factory installation of autogas and dual-fuel systems, but only in countries where the market is mature and volumes have been steady for some years. Most conversions are done in the aftermarket. Pike Research anticipates that by 2020 there will be more than 23 million autogas vehicles operating on roads worldwide...

* Michigan / USA - ANTI-CRASH TECHNOLOGY pilot launches in

(Photo: Road test of connected vehicle crash avoidance technology)
Ann Arbor,MICH,USA -Busworld (Belgium) -22 Aug 2012: -- Nearly 3,000 cars, trucks and buses equipped with “connected” Wi-Fi technology to enable vehicles and infrastructure to “talk” to each other in real time to help avoid crashes and improve traffic flow will begin traversing Ann Arbor, Mich. streets as part of a year-long safety pilot project by the U.S. Department of Transportation (U.S. DOT)...   U.S. Transportation Secretary, Ray LaHood, recently joined elected officials and industry and community leaders on the University of Michigan campus to launch the second phase of the Safety Pilot, the largest road test to date of connected vehicle crash avoidance technology...  According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), V2V safety technology could help drivers avoid or reduce the severity of four out of five unimpaired vehicle crashes. To accomplish this, the model deployment vehicles will send electronic data messages, receive messages from other equipped vehicles and translate the data into a warning to the driver during specific hazardous traffic scenarios. Such hazards include an impending collision at a blind intersection, a vehicle changing lanes in another vehicle’s blind spot or a rear collision with a vehicle stopped ahead, among others...  The information collected from both phases of the Safety Pilot and other key research projects will be used by NHTSA to determine by 2013 whether to proceed with additional activities involving connected vehicle technology, including possible rulemaking...

* Massachussets - Semiautonomous driving system takes over when drivers make mistakes

Cambridge,MASS,USA -Busworld (Belgium) -29 Aug 2012: -- MIT researchers have developed a semiautonomous safety system which allows a human driver full control of a vehicle until it detects that the vehicle is heading toward a hazard or obstacle, at which point it takes control and steers to safety. When such a hazard is detected, the system will bring it back within a calculated safe zone, and then hand control back over to the driver. The so-called intelligent co-pilot system is the work of Sterling Anderson (PhD student at MIT's Department of Mechanical Engineering) and Karl Iagnemma (principal research scientist at the Institute's Robotic Mobility Group). Instead of using a path-based control, such as self-parking systems where a driver allows the vehicle to take over control of the vehicle to safely park, the system uses selective enforcement of constraints. Anderson and Iagnemma have put the system through more than 1,200 trials in Michigan since September 2011... In its current configuration and on a challenging obstacle course, the system reduces the occurrence of accidents by over 75 percent, while allowing the driver to decrease his/her course completion time by 30 percent. The researchers believe they can reduce the collision rate to zero with the integration of a tactical-grade IMU...

* USA - Report: Hybrids capture 40% of transit bus market

(Photo: Metro Transit’s hybrid-electric buses in the Twin Cities, USA)
Boulder,COL,USA -Busworld (Belgium) -27 Aug 2012: -- In North America, hybrid buses have captured as much as 40% of new transit bus purchases in recent years. Electric drivetrains — whether for hybrid systems, battery-electric, or fuel cell — hold appeal for the bus market for many of the same reasons they do for light-duty vehicles: the promise of moving away from oil, efficiency gains, limiting greenhouse gas emissions, and, in many cases, lower operating costs... According to the Pike Research report, “Electric Drive Buses,” the global market for electric-drive buses is expected to grow steadily over the next six years, with a compound annual growth rate of 26% from 2012 to 2018. By 2018, more than 75,000 electric drivetrain buses will be in service around the world, the report concludes... While growth in the e-bus market will accelerate strongly in certain regions, including Eastern Europe and Latin America, by far the largest sales volumes will come in Asia Pacific, the study finds. More than 15,000 electric buses will be sold in Asia Pacific in 2018 — 75% of the world total. North American sales are expected to reach just fewer than 2,500 in the same year...

* South Korea - Scientists develop lithioum-ion battery that charges 120 times faster than normal

Ulsan,SK-Busworld (Belgium) -23 Aug 2012: -- A group of Korean scientists, working at the Ulsan National Institute of Science and Technology (UNIST), have developed a fast-charge lithium-ion battery that can be recharged 30 to 120 times faster than conventional li-ion batteries. The team believes it can build a battery pack for electric vehicles that can be fully charged in less than a minute. The Korean method takes the cathode material — standard lithium manganese oxide (LMO) in this case — and soaks it in a solution containing graphite. Then, by carbonizing the graphite-soaked LMO, the graphite turns into a dense network of conductive traces that run throughout the cathode. This new cathode is then packaged normally, with an electrolyte and graphite anode, to create the fast-charging li-ion battery. Other factors, such as the battery’s energy density and cycle life seem to remain unchanged. These networks of carbonized graphite effectively act like blood vessels, allowing every part of the battery to recharge at the same time — thus speeding up recharge by 30 to 120 times. The network of conductive traces does increase the overall size of the battery, so it’s probably better suited for use in electric vehicles (EVs). Obviously, an EV that can be recharged in under a minute is pretty fast. However, li-ion battery packs are quite expensive — and the Korean carbonized LMO process certainly will not be lowering their price...

* DC / USA - Capital Metro – Mirror Awareness Guide

Washington,DC,USA -Mass Transit Mag -Feb 2011: -- One of Capital Metro’s most common types of collisions was mirror-to-mirror. Surprisingly, more collisions occurred from vehicles overtaking buses rather than from oncoming traffic. To counter this problem, the agency developed its Mirror Awareness Guide (MAG) devices and affixed them to the street-side rear section of its buses. The MAG device is the width of a bus mirror and set to the center height of the street-side exterior mirror...  The premise is simple: when an overtaking vehicle approaches the bus and begins to pass, the driver should notice the protruding MAG device, which focuses their attention on the bus, causing them to pass with a wider safety cushion...  If they fail to notice the device and travel too close to the bus, their mirror will hit the device producing a loud noise without harming their mirror or the flexible MAG. This should encourage them to move away from the bus before striking its mirror...

* Connecticut / USA - CTTransit – Hydrogen Garage Modifications

CT,USA -Mass Transit Mag -Feb 2011: -- Initially, bus companies testing hydrogen-fueled buses spent millions of dollars building small separate garages or bays for these specially fueled vehicles. These facilities were very expensive as they were designed to contain an explosion should one occur. CTTransit felt this was the wrong strategy and hired a consultant with extensive experience working with hydrogen with sophisticated computer modeling tools...  Hydrogen is the lightest element in the universe, and if released, it disperses quickly. It is only flammable or explosive if concentrated. CTTransit was able to prove to the state facility engineer and fire marshals a better way to handle a hydrogen leak was not to contain it, concentrating it, but dispersing it immediately...  The approved final solution was groundbreaking and inexpensive. CTTransit placed hydrogen leak detectors in its bus and bus bay and connected both to the facility backup electrical power supply should grid power fail. It locked out/tagged out the bus’ hydrogen fuel system before bringing it into the garage and ran it solely on electric power...  Plastic covers were placed over bus bay light fixtures to prevent hydrogen from entering them and eliminating the lights as a possible spark source. Ventilation ducts were lowered from the ceiling so a constant low flow of air would be directed on the bus at all times...

* Colorado / USA - Proterra:  EcoRide

Golden, CO ,USA -Mass Transit Mag -Feb 2011: -- Traditionally, the barriers to employing battery-powered buses in large-scale applications were the range and charging needs of batteries. Additionally, the weight of traditional buses has made it difficult to feasibly incorporate a battery with sufficient power and energy storage capacity into coach designs...  Proterra Inc. is unique in that it designs and manufactures an electric bus’ complete system, including its own TerraVolt energy storage system which includes batteries, battery management system and integration system, FastFill rooftop rapid charging system, ProDrive drive system using a UQM PowerPhase 150 motor with three-speed gearbox, and a Continental VDO master control system with custom programming...  The Proterra EcoRide BE 35 is different than most battery drive vehicles where range is dictated by the number of batteries. The Ecoliner can operate 24 hours a day, seven days a week on routes outfitted with fast-charge stations...  The key to this project is the utilization of the fast-charge battery. According to laboratory data, this battery retains its energy reserve and charging profile from 8,000 to 25,000 charge-discharge cycles and can be quick-charged from a 10 percent to a 95 percent charge in 10 minutes or less while the bus is at a layover...  The EcoRide BE 35 offers zero emissions, potential for 90 percent reduction in fuel costs, significant noise reduction, lower maintenance costs and 90 percent regenerative braking energy recapture.
