BUDGET * Australia - Phantom bus rides cost $100m
Sydney,Australia -The Sydney Morning Herald, by Anna Patty -November 7, 2008: -- More than $200 million of the State Government school transport subsidy is spent on unused bus rides and providing free bus travel for students who bypass public schools to attend private schools, an analysis of Department of Transport figures shows... The analysis indicates that of the $470 million it spent on the transport subsidy scheme this year, the State Government paid school bus operators more than $100 million for student rides that were not taken... The Greens MP John Kaye said an estimated $125 million was spent on students riding past their nearest public school to attend a private school...
