Bus services in Doncaster could return to council control - after government ministers paved the way for the nation's local authorities to set their own routes and fares

A reworking of the Local Transport Bill, drawn up to end a 20-year era of deregulation which has seen passenger numbers slump, proposes that local authorities should have the power to award "quality contracts"... The strict franchise deals would give bus operators the opportunity to bid for exclusive rights to operate within a particular area - where the local council would control routes, fares and the frequency of buses...
