Bus services in Doncaster could return to council control - after government ministers paved the way for the nation's local authorities to set their own routes and fares

A reworking of the Local Transport Bill, drawn up to end a 20-year era of deregulation which has seen passenger numbers slump, proposes that local authorities should have the power to award "quality contracts"... The strict franchise deals would give bus operators the opportunity to bid for exclusive rights to operate within a particular area - where the local council would control routes, fares and the frequency of buses... South Yorkshire's main bus operator, First, however, says they are already working successfully in tandem with the region's local authorities...

Ministers have caved in to calls for local authorities to be given the final say over taking on London-style powers to set routes and fares...
