"GREEN" NEWS * UK - London buses turning green

Transport for London (TfL) is due to take delivery of a new bus powered by Brazilian sugar cane

London,UK -New Car Net -23 April 2007: -- ... The new bus is supplementary to the seven existing hybrid diesel-electric buses already in service, with 50 more planned by the end of next year... TfL Environment Coordinator Helen Woolston also reported that after successful trials, a fleet of 10 hydrogen-powered buses will be purchased from automaker DaimlerChrysler... Other points of note included a banding for the congestion charge based on vehicle CO2 emissions, similar to the Government VED banding... Meanwhile the alternative fuel buses are part of the Ken Livingstone's goal of cutting London's CO2 emissions by 60% from 1990 levels by 2025... (Picture: TfL wants to cut emissions)
* USA - Metro rolls out 10 hybrid buses - Another 30 are expected to be put into service later this year
Houston,TX,USA -The Houston Chronicle, by RAD SALLEE -April 25, 2007: -- The Metropolitan Transit Authority recently gave the green light, so to speak, to two changes that could help clean Houston's air and reduce fuel consumption... Metro had its first 10 diesel-electric hybrid buses in service on seven local routes... Another 30 are coming this year — very likely to a bus stop near you. Watch for the grille in front, which appears to be smiling... If the technology works as hoped, Metro's entire bus fleet could be converted to hybrids as buses are replaced over the years, but that is uncertain at this point...
* USA - Norwich school buses to be used in demo on pollution reduction
Hartford,CT,USA -Norwich Bulletin (Norwich,CT) -27 April 2007: -- Bruce Hill, a senior scientist, from A Clean Air Task Force, will demonstrate Tuesday the dramatic reduction in diesel pollution that can be achieved with the installation of a pollution control device on a school bus... Two Norwich school buses will be used in the demonstration: one has been retrofitted with a filter to reduce emissions by up to 90 percent and one school bus that has not yet been retrofitted... Without the control device, diesel exhaust can build up inside the cabin at a level up to ten times higher than outside the bus, threatening the respiratory health of the children on the bus...
