* California - Study  shows biodiesel blends in buses reduce PM

San Jose,CAL,USA -Busworld (Belgium) -3 Nov 2014: -- A new study on the combustion properties of biodiesel for use in urban transit buses found that using biodiesel can effectively reduce the mass of particulate matter released in both hot and cold idle modes...  The study, published by the Mineta National Transit Research Consortium (MNTRC), observed a reduction in amount of particulate matter, number of elements, and elemental carbon; the reduction is considered beneficial to promoting the clean air and human health... The researchers found that biodiesel has many advantages over regular diesel even in a very low blend percentage, including low emissions of particulate matter, combustion elements (mainly sulfur), elemental carbon, and carbon monoxide. In sum, they recommended that governments consider using blends of biodiesel in urban and commercial vehicles to enhance air quality... Particulate matter (PM) samples were collected through field tests of 10 different transit buses to investigate the source of elements in the emission gases. A similar procedure was followed to collect and analyze PM from the laboratory combustion experiments to determine precisely which elements are from biodiesel fuels. A total of eleven inorganic and metal elements were detected in the laboratory experiments, while fifteen elements were observed in field experiments. Calcium (Ca), sodium (Na), and iron (Fe) were the major elements found in the PM emissions in both the field experiments (77 to 85 wt %) and the lab experiments (up to 90 wt%)...

* Tennessee - Study: Best current use of N.G. in efficient production of electriciby for EV's

(Image
Oak Ridge,TN,USA -Green Car Congress, by Mike Millikin -13 Oct 2014: -- A well-to-wheels analysis of the use of natural gas for passenger vehicles by a team of researchers from Oak Ridge National Laboratory, has found that, with a high PTW (pump-to-wheels) efficiency and the potential for high electrical generation efficiency with NGCC (natural gas combined cycle) turbines, natural gas currently is best used in an efficient stationary power application for charging EVs... However, they also noted, high PTW efficiencies and the moderate fuel economies of current compressed natural gas vehicles (CNGVs) make them a viable option as well. If CNG were to be eventually used in hybrids, the advantage of the electric generation/EV option shrinks... The study investigated the WTW energy and emissions from the use of natural gas in CNGVs with a range of CNGV fuel economy and natural gas compressor efficiency. The authors compared these results to a range of fuel economies from an EV that was charged from electricity produced from the US mix and a range of natural gas turbines with varying efficiencies...

GREEN BUSES * USA - Operator Gary Bauer Introduces Solar Bus at BusCon

The solar powering system retrofitted to a 52-passenger Setra motorcoach can handle onboard electronics with the engine off

Chicago,ILL,USA -Solar Hybrid Bus -October 6, 2010: -- To help transportation companies nationwide comply with strict anti-idling laws, Gary Bauer of BAUER’S INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION in San Francisco introduced a bus featuring the new Solar Hybrid Bus Powering System at the BusCon Conference & Expo last week...   The Solar Bus consists of four thin film solar panels that run the length of the bus and charge an on-board battery bank. When the bus engine is off, the batteries power the air-conditioning and wireless connectivity equipment, enabling the buses to effectively meet anti-idling standards without compromising passenger comfort...   Bauer said the new bus may also provide a savings of up to $14,000 in fuel per bus per year and reduce up to 345,000 grams of NOx per bus per year while conforming to the Airborne Toxic Control Measure. The law states that a vehicle cannot idle for more than five minutes, and only 30 seconds when parked within 100 feet of a school... (Photo by Meredith Spencer/The Vicksburg Post - Donald Johnson of Waters Truck and Tractor installs one of the new diesel oxidation catalysts on a bus)

Vicksburg,MISS,USA -The Vicksburg Post, by Danny Barrett Jr. -April 7, 2010: -- Public school students in Vicksburg and Warren County might be breathing a bit easier due to green technology installed this week on the oldest buses in the Vicksburg Warren School District’s fleet..

(Photo: A pile of the old catalytic converters)
Diesel Oxidation Catalysts, or DOCs, are replacing traditional catalytic converters on eligible buses statewide built between 1998 and 2006, including 35 here.
The newer converters contain a porous, honeycomb-like structure that is coated with a material that triggers a chemical reaction to reduce pollution. No maintenance is needed for DOCs and they don’t affect the fuel economy of the buses, according to
the Mississippi Department of Environmental Quality, which bought and paid for installation with money from the federal stimulus act and grants from the Environmental Protection Agency. Emissions of particulate matter should be cut 40 percent and hydrocarbons cut 70 percent as a result of the DOCs, according to MDEQ...

GREEN NEWS * Brazil - São Paulo joins EU's BEST project with pure ethanol bus trial; over 400 in operation so far

Sao Paulo,Brazil -Biopact (Brussel,Belgium) -January 13, 2008: -- The University of São Paulo's (USP) Cenbio (National Center for Biomass Technologies) of the Electrotechnical Institute of Energy (IEE), has joined an EU-led international project aimed at researching and stimulating the use of ethanol in public transport... The €17.7 million BEST project (Bioethanol for Sustainable Transport) now has more than 160 buses running on the fuel in cities across Europe and in China. Sweden is the leader and has been operating ethanol buses for over 15 years, with more than 400 now on the road... The participation of Brazil is logical, because the country is the largest user of the biofuel. Under BEST, the megacity of São Paulo will trial a set of buses running on a special E95 hydrous alcohol fuel for one year to demonstrate the nearly pure biofuel's viability and to study its emissions profile. The vehicles will serve the metropolitan Jabaquara corridor, with nine terminals and four municipalities: São Paulo, Diadema, São Bernardo do Campo and Sainto André. This 33-km line will transport 1900 travelers per day. (See video at O Globo).
