* UK - Europe, Canada pilot hydrogen buses
Weybridge,UK -Environmental Transport Association -6 Oct 2006: -- Six cities across Europe and Canada are taking part in a programme to test hydrogen buses for potential introduction into their transport systems... London, Amsterdam, Berlin, Hamburg and British Columbia will all see the environmentally friendly buses take to their streets in a trial that could lead to more widespread adoption of the technology-advanced carriers... Some London bus routes are already served by hydrogen buses, whose carbon-neutral fuel cell technology means they emit only water and produce no polluting carbon dioxide emissions...
* USA - Firm unveils its new hybrid diesel-electric school buses
WEST VALLEY,AZ,USA -The Arizona Republic (Phoenix,AZ), by Tara Brite -Oct. 7, 2006: -- In a time when energy and fuel conservation matter, even the traditional yellow school bus is going green... North America's largest school-bus manufacturers, IC Corp., showed off its new hybrid school buses to more than 200 Arizona school- district employees on Wednesday at Cardinals Stadium in Glendale...
* USA - City's new buses will be hybrids
Albuquerque,NM,USA -The Albuquerque Tribune, by Michael Amedeo -Oct 7, 2006: -- ABQ Ride spokesman Jay Faught admits that gas mileage isn't great for nearly three dozen new buses expected to join the city's public transportation fleet in 2007, but it's an improvement... The 40-foot, diesel-electric hybrids should get 4.5 miles per gallon, compared with 3.2 miles per gallon for the old buses they will replace, he said... "They're better and cleaner for the environment," he said, noting that it's unlikely any bus will get the gas mileage people are accustomed to with their cars... Also, the 35 hybrid buses should not need an engine replacement until they've covered 800,000 miles, instead of 350,000 miles for the old buses. That means even more savings in the long run that will make up for the greater cost, he said...
* USA -Columbus buses roll with soy biodiesel
Columbus,OH,USA -Ohio Farm Bureau (press release) -5 Oct 2006: -- The Central Ohio Transit Authority (COTA) is using the sides of buses to advertise the importance of soy biodiesel. Soy biodiesel, made from soybeans-- a renewable resource grown in Ohio--is the state’s leading alternative fuel and can be used in any diesel engine with no modifications... All 234 of COTA’s buses are powered by soy biodiesel and currently run on a B50 blend (50 percent soy biodiesel and 50 percent petroleum). June through September, the fleet ran on a B90 blend, the highest blend used by a transit fleet in the U.S... COTA’s estimated savings using the alternative fuel is $400,000 a year... The new design on the buses is part of an ongoing effort that demonstrates COTA’s initiative to cleaning up central Ohio, lessening dependence on foreign oil and reducing fuel costs by using soy biodiesel...
