Melbourne,Victoria,Australia -The Age -Apr 26, 2006: -- Dr Alan Moran's argument that demographic developments have worked against public transport systems (Business, 30/3), recounts only one small part of the emerging story of public transport in Melbourne... The Committee for Melbourne's five-year public transport plan, released in November, recognises that a liveable Melbourne is simply not feasible without substantial investment in public transport. Traffic congestion, emission levels, the road toll and social exclusion, all associated with excessive car dependence, demand an increased emphasis on public transport investment and service upgrade... Buses are the most viable alternative for the dispersed trip patterns of such areas. More than 60 per cent of Melburnians have no train or tram service within 400 metres, only buses. But bus service levels are well below those of trains and trams. Bus services typically start later, finish earlier, run less frequently and on fewer days than train and tram services...
