Vote - USA - Livonia bus vote reaches beyond city
Regional system's cost is weighed against loss that may strand students, seniors, some workers
LIVONIA,Mich,USA -The Detroit News, by Darren A. Nichols and Catherine Jun -5 Nov 2005: -- It's either a money-saver, or an issue that could, in the words of one critic, set the stage for economic disaster... What is clear is that a proposal that Livonia pull out of the regional Suburban Mobility Authority for Transportation (SMART) bus system, to which it now pays $2.4 million per year, is an important one... City residents will vote Tuesday whether to drop out of SMART, despite opposition from some residents who ride the buses... Though ridership has increased about 25 percent in the last three years, 53 communities in Wayne and Oakland counties have already backed out of SMART. Farmington Hills is the latest city to consider bowing out of the SMART system in 2006...
