Happy Rider - USA - Commuting By Bus
Traffic congestion threatens the quality of life in Central Texas
Austin,TX,USA -KXAN 36 -Nov 8, 2005: -- Twice a day. Five days a week. Ten hours of your life -- a whole workday -- just getting to work and back again... There will never be enough pavement... But is there a better way? We spend millions on Capital Metro, but how many commuters have actually tried it?... We test it out and see if taking the bus could work for you... When gas prices spiked, Central Texans started looking at other ways to get around. Cap Metro says ridership on commuter bus routes jumped nine percent this summer... But even though gasoline is recently less expensive, who knows what it will cost a year from now... So, we'd give the bus a try... For a dollar, we get a comfortable and clean bus with airplane style air vents and seats... the bus is nice. The folks are friendly and true bus believers... Off we go into the flood of traffic. Outside our windows, the morning battle rages. For some, it's way to cut the cost of commuting. For others, it's little extra snooze time. Some passengers visit. Others read, work or just pass the time... That afternoon... Forty-seven minutes later and we're back in Cedar Park. I feel relaxed -- do you? I feel relaxed."... The next day, we tried a commuter route into downtown... Again... That afternoon, we catch the Flyer southbound. Traffic's a mess... Forty-three minutes later, and we're back in Oak Hill. But the important things is that it was a relaxed 43 minutes... Overall, ride time on the buses was not much different than taking a car since we're all in the same traffic... Dan has commuted in his own car for years, but on the bus was the first time he said ever enjoyed rush hour...
