Safety - Thailand - No guarantee of repeated accidents

MORE MUST BE DONE TO MAKE BUSES SAFER

Bangkok, Thailand -Bangkok Post -13 Nov 2005: -- Many commuters know taking a ride on privately-run city buses operating under concession from the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority is unsafe, but they feel they have no choice. ``I feel anxious every time I take this bus but I have to take it because I have no other choice,'' said Duangnaparat Srisuk, a 31-year-old company employee... BMTA drivers did not pose similar problems because they were better recruited and regularly trained. They are paid salaries plus a daily allowance and are subject to strict regulations as the BMTA is a state enterprise, he said... BMTA drivers enjoy increased salaries for long service and their pay has reached as much as 22,240 baht a month... He said BMTA buses were in better condition as they underwent regular maintenance thanks to state subsidies... However, it has only 3,623 buses, accounting for just 23% of all buses in Bangkok. The rest belong to private concessionaires...
