Experience? - Malaysia - Why only bus drivers?
KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia -New Straits Times, by Arman Ahmad -Nov 13 2005: -- A bus operators' association and a transport union have shot down a proposal by Works Minister Datuk Seri S. Samy Vellu that only drivers with more than 10 years' experience be allowed to drive express buses, as impractical and not worthy of consideration.
Pan Malaysian Bus Operators' Association president Datuk Mohd Ashfar Ali said the proposal implied that bus drivers were incompetent. He also questioned why only bus drivers were targeted... "In a year, some bus drivers will probably clock more hours than what other drivers could achieve in their lifetime... But no operator will want to take the risk of entrusting their buses, which cost between RM300,000 and RM600,000, to inexperienced drivers. If anything happens, they have much to lose."... He said the Government should tighten the issue of permits for heavy vehicles, have stricter enforcement and increase the standard of driving tests... Secretary-general Zainal Rampak said what needed to be done was to enhance the driving curriculum. He said bus operators should also be taken to task, especially those who put their drivers through long working hours... Another problem, he said, was the practice of paying commission based on the number of journeys made, as this encouraged bus drivers to break the speed limit to make more trips...
