Riders Up - USA - It's the price of gas !!

As gas prices rise, more people are letting someone else drive
Yakima,WA,USA -Yakima Herald Republic, by JANE GARGAS -Nov 6, 2005: -- No wonder the wheels of the bus go 'round and 'round, 'round and 'round. It's the price of gas... The high cost of gasoline is driving up ridership on local public transportation, specifically the Yakima Transit System... As the price of gasoline started edging toward $3 a gallon this spring, more people began edging toward the bus... Bus ridership is 4 percent higher here this year than last, with most of the increase coming during the past few months... While 22 percent of the transit riders here are older than 62, they don't make up the bulk of those riding; about 40 percent of the riders are ages 18-61, and nearly 35 percent are ages 6-17... All city buses are equipped with wheelchair lifts and kneelers, which lower the bus 6 inches to make boarding easier. For the more mobile, each bus has a bike rack, too... In addition to saving on the price of gasoline, riding the bus has other advantages, Mehin points out. People can read, nap, play video games or do homework, he says...
