HYBRID BUSES * Canada

* Ontario - City won’t buy more hybrid buses. OC Transpo’s multimillion-dollar hybrid bus program is losing energy

(Photo: An "Oc Transpo" bus, Ottawa)
Ottawa,ONT,CAN -The Ottawa Sun, by Jon Willing -January 27, 2012: -- Larry Atkinson, manager of transit maintenance, confirmed that the company has no plans to purchase new diesel-electric buses, once touted as the answer to ballooning fuel costs... In fact, the hybrids have become part of Transpo’s problem of its fuel budget projected to be 19% overspent when the books close on 2011... There are 154 hybrid buses in Transpo’s 1,000-bus fleet but managers have been hard-pressed to maximize the vehicles’ efficiency on Ottawa’s relatively high-speed transit network... Each hybrid bus has cost the city about $100,000 to $150,000 more to buy compared to a diesel bus... Transpo’s first hybrid buses hit Ottawa streets in late 2008 and were promoted as green machines that would reduce fuel costs by 17-36%... Fast forward to September 2011, when Transpo indicated the hybrids alone were contributing $1 million to the year’s fuel deficit... Transpo indicates it will look into natural gas as an alternative bus fuel, especially since there are projections for low natural gas prices and high diesel prices...

STUDY * USA - Show promise for hybrid school buses

The hybrid-buses got 30% better mileage in Nevada and 36% better in Sigourney

Nevada,IA,USA -Radio Iowa, by Dar Danielson -March 29, 2010: -- Two hybrid-electric school buses were purchased for the Nevada and Sigourney school districts and run alongside regular buses... An Iowa State University researcher says a study of hybrid school buses shows some promise for decreasing fuel costs and pollution, if mechanical problems with the buses can be fixed. ... Shauna Hallmark of the I.S.U. Institute for Transportation, says the hybrid-buses got 30% better mileage in Nevada and 36% better in Sigourney. Hallmark says. Diesel fuel is occasionally up to $4.00-a-gallon, and a school bus gets about six miles to the gallon... Hallmark says it’s not just fuel economy, it’s also the emissions put out by the buses. She says buses put out a lot of the small fine black particulates that pollute the air, and the hybrid buses would reduce the amount of pollution the kids are exposed to... The charging system does some charging from the bus diesel engine, but the majority of the charging has to be done by plugging in the bus. And she says something was not working, so the batter did not charge...

HYBRID BUSES * USA - Daimler sells another 96 Orion VII clean diesel

Transit Agencies Order More Clean Diesel Than Diesel-Hybrid Buses

New York,NY,USA -AutoBlogGreen, by Sam Abuelsamid -January 25, 2010: -- Daimler's North American bus unit has received orders for nearly 100 more of its Orion VII transit buses powered by either new clean diesel engines or diesel-hybrid drivetrains. The bulk of the orders (91 buses) come from four transit agencies and are for the conventional clean-diesel models with the latest Bluetec after-treatment systems. The emissions controls consist of urea-injection catalytic reduction to cut NOx emissions and particulate filters to eliminate soot... The remaining five orders were for Orion VII hybrids for the Ulster County Area Transit and Dutchess County Bus Systems in New York state. Ulster County already has two of the hybrids in its fleet and is adding three more... Hybrid buses gained a lot of ground in North America over the past several years but economics likely played a big part in the small proportion among these new orders. Municipalities around the country have been particularly hard hit in the current recession and the significantly higher purchase cost of the hybrids tilted the deal, even though the advanced powertrain buses offer lower operating cost over the life of the vehicles...

DART's Going GREEN * USA - With New Electric Hybrid Buses

Wilmington,DEL,USA -Sbay News -June 24, 2009: -- The DART bus fleet is going GREEN with 15 new electric hybrid buses. The new hybrid buses, built by the Gillig Corporation of Hayward, California, feature a colorful headliner banner, Powered by Hybrid Electric Technology Doing Our Part For Clean Air. The hybrid electric technology on DART buses consists of a highly efficient diesel engine, running on super low-sulphur fuel, in combination with an Allison electric drive transmission system. The bus operates in its electric mode at speeds up to 25 mph. The diesel engine will then provide power solely or in combination with the electric motor as needed. Unlike gas engine hybrids, the diesel motor keeps running when the bus is operating on electric power. The reason is that diesels can sometimes be more difficult to start quickly. When not in demand the diesel operates at low idle and continues to generate electricity... (Photo from dart.org: NABIBus2)

HYBRID BUSES * USA - Staten Island fire sparks probe into

After two electrical fires in the last two months investigators are looking into potential problems with the city's new fleet of hybrid buses

Staten Island,NY,USA -Staten Island Advance/SILive, by Maura Yates -March 23, 2009: -- The buses use regenerative braking technology to generate electricity to power the batteries... A fire broke out aboard a parked bus just before 1:30 a.m. March 14 on a ramp at the St. George Ferry Terminal. The driver smelled smoke and saw flames coming out of an electrical panel behind the driver's seat. No passengers were on board at the time and the driver was not injured... Another fire had been reported aboard another hybrid bus on Jan. 13 in Flatbush, Brooklyn. No passengers were injured in that incident... An investigation into the cause of the first fire found a melted metal stud on a "barrier box" in an electrical panel behind the driver. The extra stud had been installed in the wrong place, and may have come into contact with several 24 volt power cables nearby, causing a short, investigators believe... After the first fire, all vehicles being built by Orion at its Mississauga, Ontario, factory, or in its Oriskany, N.Y., plant, were put "on hold" until they could be checked to see if any other buses had studs mistakenly installed in the same spot... Hybrid-bus * Canada - Savings coming up short

Fuel use reduced by half as much as makers claimed

Victoria,British Columbia,Canada -The Times Colonist, by Joanne Hatherly -November 10, 2008: -- The capital region's diesel-electric hybrid buses are falling far short of the 20 to 30 per cent fuel savings promised by the manufacturer, according to B.C. Transit... The Toronto Transit Commission's recent announcement that it was switching back from hybrids to diesel-only buses due to problems with batteries raised the question of how well Victoria's hybrid buses are performing... Aaron Lamb, fleet director for B.C. Transit, said the hybrid buses are showing a savings of 10 to 13 per cent, less than half of the manufacturer's claim of savings between 20 and 30 per cent. B.C. Transit arrived at that figure after running one of each type of bus on an identical route... However, Victoria's buses are not experiencing any battery problems. The TTC buses run on lead-acid batteries, while B.C. Transit's batteries are nickel-metal hydride. TTC buses are saving on fuel costs at the same rate as B.C. Transit hybrids... The Victoria buses are built by New Flyer in Winnipeg, Man., while the TTC buses were built by Daimler. Transit obtained six buses in 2005 as a pilot project: Three operate in Kelowna and three in Victoria... (Photograph by : Debra Brash, Times Colonist - The region's electric-diesel hybrid buses are saving on fuel, but not as much as the manufacturer claimed)
