Living Green * USA - Sarasota County adds to hybrid bus fleet
The benefits of using public transportation are obvious - it keeps cars off the road
Sarasota County,FL,USA -My Suncosast/ABC News TV7 -July 7, 2009: -- ... And in Sarasota County, a growing fleet of hybrid buses are showing up on those roads... The county added four more hybrid buses last week, making 14 in all...with plenty more to come... They're 27% more fuel-efficient than the standard diesel powered bus. That adds up to a savings of $16,500 per bus, per year... The new buses are shorter and will save even more fuel and money -- about $21,000 per bus... The county's hybrid fleet is a huge help in these budget-conscious times. "Overall, the 14 buses total are going to amount in savings to Sarasota County of $228,000, which is a tremendous savings," says county commissioner Jon Thaxton... But it's not just about money. The hybrids help the environment, too. Pollution is 50-90% less than a typical diesel bus. And they're quieter...
