-- The U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Transit Administration (FTA) today announced the opportunity to apply for approximately $266 million in competitive grant funding for bus programs nationwide. The funding consists of $211 million in grants for buses and bus facilities projects, as well as $55 million specifically for FTA’s Low and No Emission (Low-No) bus program, which promotes technologically-advanced and environmentally-friendly buses. These investments will help advance the President’s vision for a cleaner, 21st century transportation system that reduces carbon emissions while expanding transportation options for families... Eligible projects include those that replace, rehabilitate, lease, and purchase buses and related equipment as well as projects to purchase, rehabilitate, construct or lease bus-related facilities, such as buildings for bus storage and maintenance... FTA will award the grants to eligible transit agencies, state transportation departments, and Indian tribes on a competitive basis...

** Arizona - The Phoenix Public Transit Department has ordered 120 new buses

-- It is first order for new 40-foot buses since 2013... The buses use compressed natural gas and have a fuel range of at least 400 miles, meaning most of the new buses won't require daily refueling... The new buses replace existing liquefied natural gas buses that average 12 years and 500,000 miles of service... The new buses are equipped with an enhanced air conditioning system that includes two units that work in tandem to cool both the front and back of the bus simultaneously... The new buses replace about 25 percent of the city's fleet...

... In the last budget, the government had promised to procure 1,380 semi-low floor buses, 500 mini buses for DTC and another 1,000 buses under the cluster scheme... Though that plan was shelved, the government has now proposed to procure 3,000 buses — 1,000 under cluster scheme, 1,000 non-ac under DTC and 1,000 premium buses under public private partnership... DTC has 4,461 buses which include 3,781 low-floor buses and 680 standard floor buses. About 1,490 cluster buses are operational... The government also plans to renovate bus terminals at Sarai Kale Khan and Anand Vihar with world-class passenger amenities and a new ISBT at Dwarka is also proposed. About 1,397 new Bus Queue Shelters are proposed to be constructed under PPP mode but the government had made the same promise in the last budget... The government has also increased the one-time fixed subsidy for e-rickshaw from existing `15,000 to `30,000. Electric vehicles have been exempted from road tax...

-- Striking a fine balance between reforms and welfare, the A.P. State Road Transport Corporation (APSRTC) is treading cautiously to wriggle out of financial crisis... In addition to the series of passenger-friendly initiatives that have changed the face of its main bus stand Pandit Nehru Bus Station, the officials now plan to add 2,700 new buses to its fleet. This will cost the RTC around Rs.625 crore... Of the total 2,700 buses, 1,500 will be Express and Deluxe buses, 750 Super Luxury, 450 buses will be operated exclusively in Tirumala Ghat roads and 80 Indra buses... The Transport Corporation had switched over to use of 100 per cent eco-friendly bio-diesel fuel... Keeping in view welfare of its work force, the RTC is planning to introduce an accident insurance policy. Under the scheme, in the event of any RTC employee or worker meeting with a casualty, the insurance company will pay a sum of Rs.5 lakh... -- The Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) would soon add 316 new buses, including 16 Volvo buses to its existing fleet of 2,655 vehicles to provide better services to commuters... During the past three years, 1,300 new buses have been added to the HRTC fleet and 365 routes have been opened... The buses are equipped with GPS, CCTVs and passenger information systems and the state government is making efforts to connect all the historical and pilgrimage places with major towns by luxury bus services, he said... The Corporation is currently plying buses on 2,400 routes, including the uneconomical routes in remote areas with an elevation ranging from 2,000 ft to 16,000 feet, covering 4.60 lakh km daily, the spokesman said...

* Delhi - DTC plans to float fresh tender for 1,000 buses

-- More than two years and multiple tenders later, the Delhi Transport Corporation state bus agency has decided to float another tender - this time for 1,000 buses... According to officials, the proposal is for 1,000 low-floor non-AC buses. DTC at present has around 4,500 buses in its fleet. On ground though, only 3,800 ply every day. At least 800 buses are the older, standard-floor buses, which are fast heading for scrap. The transport utility has been trying to augment its fleet for several years now... The Delhi government had, through DIMTS, come out with a global expression of interest (EoI) in November last year... Transport minister Gopal Rai, has already announced that the government will make around 1,000 buses available in the public transport system by April this year, followed by another 1,000 in August. A premium service comprising 1,000 buses is also likely to be announced in November 2016...

New Haven,CT,USA -Yale Daily News, by McKenna Keyes -April 6, 2011: -- As of last Monday, the Connecticut Department of Transportation added 12 60-foot buses to the New Haven CTTRANSIT fleet of public buses. These longer buses are formally called articulated buses, which are commonly referred to as “bendy buses,” and have the ability to make turns like a 40-foot bus, using an accordion-like middle section that allows the last 20 feet of bus to bend inward. The new buses, which are roomier, were met with positive reviews from New Haven residents interviewed yesterday... Ragsdale said he has had a more challenging experience of adapting to the new bus, adding that there are more buttons, gadgets and length to deal with. However, he said the bendy buses are a good addition to the New Haven fleet because passengers have a more comfortable riding experience... The articulated buses are in accordance with U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s 2010 emission standards. The clean-energy guzzling busses will have its own factory, which is set to open later in 2011. The new factory is set to be capable of producing over 300 buses a year, and to generate more than $80 million in revenue in the first year of operations... DesignLine said that a number of Middle Eastern countries were interested in its technology with negotiations underway to convert the Gulf region’s diesel energy powered fleet to either electric or hybrid powered vehicles... Al Masah Capital this month reported that the MENA region had seen a 5.3 percent increase in green energy usage in 2010 where Abu Dhabi alone built the $19.8 billion Masdar City, a planned city that is built around the concept of clean energy...

The state road transport body saw an increase in passenger traffic from 24 lakhs to 33 lakhs in the past one year. Managing director Deepak Kapoor said most of the buses were booked well in advance. In comparison, there was a 27% growth in passenger traffic in semi-luxury buses or Asiads...

According to the article, the buses are smaller, and they will be used for a "feeder bus" role, going deeper into the housing estates to pick up passengers... The Nadi Putra service and the Putrajaya Corporation which owns the service, is also going to invest in an awareness campaign to encourage more people to take the bus... They are also promising that drivers will stick to the schedule in order to ensure that the service is reliable... The problem is not really that of the supply, but more of information, communication and attitude... Information about Nadi Putra bus services is currently poor and the awareness campaign (which will probably be little more than banners on light poles for car drivers to read) are simply not going to be enough to get more people to use the service... Metro has added 48 New Flyer diesel-electric hybrid buses to its fleet of more than 1,500 buses in recent months, helping reduce the average age of vehicles in the fleet from eight to seven years, officials said... In June and July, the bus fleet achieved its "highest reliability ever" when measured by the number of miles between breakdowns... The new buses were purchased with $27 million in federal recovery funds. In addition, Metro bought 80 paratransit vehicles worth $3.7 million and is building a new bus body and paint shop worth $21 million, projects that are creating 150 jobs locally and across the country, officials said... Of those 22 buses, 11 will incorporate the latest electric hybrid technology, resulting in fuel savings, reduced emissions and smoother, quieter rides... Each IndyGo hybrid bus combines a diesel-fueled combustion engine, made by Columbus, Ind.-based Cummins, with a battery-powered electric motor, allowing it to deliver better fuel economy as well as generate 99.84 percent fewer emissions than a conventional bus... Priced at $381,399 each, IndyGo managed to procure these 22 replacement buses from GILLIG using grant dollars, local funds and stimulus money designated through the Federal Transit Administration formula grant program as part of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of 2009. The first of the more fuel-efficient buses hit the streets Friday, and the remaining five could be in service within a week... The total cost of the six hybrid buses, including tax, is $3.7 million. The public transportation agency serving Thurston County paid for the buses with $2.3 million in federal stimulus money, nearly $751,000 in other federal funds and about $575,000 in transit authority capital funds...
