--- Volvo Buses has received an order for 100 city buses from the Bengaluru Metropolitan Transport Corporation (BMTC). The buses of the typd 8400 are in compliance with the UBS-II emission level and the BSIV emission rules. The locally manufactured Volvo D8C engine’s coupled to a 6-speed automatic transmission with integrated retarder and optimised rear axle ratio delivers high performance required in the city’s frequent start-stop traffic.. The engine supplies a peak power of 330hp in order to meet optimal power-to-weight ratio and ensure reserve power, which is critical to meet three areas for good city duty cycle – instant acceleration, air-conditioning performance, and gradeability...

* Chennai - Ashok Leyland launches first indigenous all-electric bus
--- The 31-seater bus, which has a top speed of 75kph, is powered by lithium ion batteries and has a range of 120km on a single charge... Taking the lead among commercial vehicle manufacturers in India, Ashok Leyland today commercially launched the all-electric Circuit series bus which has been fully designed and engineered in India for Indian road and load conditions... The new ‘Circuit’ series of vehicles will be offered on multiple platforms... Ashok Leyland has its wholly owned subsidiary Optare which makes electric buses, the new Circuit series bus is fully indigenous. The 31-seater bus, which has a top speed of 75kph, is powered by lithium ion batteries and has a range of 120km on a single charge. The powertrain is a driveline motor coupled to a propeller shaft and differential. Depending upon the applications and customer need, Ashok Leyland can make buses up to 55-60 seats but given the cost of the battery and duty cycle, the bus will be ideal up to 50 seats...

* New Delhi - Norms and buyer preferences set the wheels rolling

-- The bus-building industry in India is set to see its fortunes rise, after a period of lacklustre, and even negative, growth in the past decade. In the first 11 months of 2015-16, the domestic bus segment (medium and light) has registered an about 15 per cent rise compared to almost flat growth in FY15... The improvement has been driven by fresh orders by state transport undertakings, improvement in viability of private players (following a correction in diesel prices) and pre-buying ahead of BS-IV norms mandate...  The bus market in India has been a fragmented industry... The introduction of the new Bus Body Code last year is a trigger for growth and is now expected to fuel strong demand for fully-built or factory-built buses, resulting in a shift of buyer preference to Original Equipment Manufacturers. Ashok Leyland is the leader in the bus market (medium and heavy segment), with 45 per cent share, followed by Tata Motors (34 per cent). Others include VE Commercial Vehicle, SML Isuzu and Mahindra & Mahindra, while Volvo has been operating in the premium segment. The latest entrants in India are Daimler and Scania...

-- At the 2016 Auto Expo, JBM Auto Ltd had unveiled the ECOLIFE bus which is likely India’s first fully electric bus. The revolutionary new advancement was developed in partnership with Solaris Bus & Coach S.A from Europe. Powered by Lithium-ion batteries the ECOLIFE can be used on pantograph or can be run on plug-in charging. In-case you are not aware of what a pantograph is, it is basically a unit which is located on the top of a vehicle which draws electrical charge from overhead power lines set on a designated track... The ECOLIFE has a range of 150-200 kms with duration of 10-15 hours in city operation when fully charged. The all-electric bus is powered by a motor which is integrated in the rear axle and is capable of producing anywhere between 109PS to 217.5PS... The 100 per cent electric bus will be offered in two versions of 9m and 12m length...

VOLVO's * India: First hybrid bus

* Maharashtra - Volvo delivers India’s first hybrid bus
-- Volvo Buses India Pvt Ltd, the local arm of the Swedish bus and truck maker delivered the first hybrid bus in India. It’s the first bus maker to commercially deploy the technology in India... The company announced this on the sidelines of Make in India event in Mumbai. The bus has been certified by the Automotive Research Association of India... The company will be delivering a batch of first five buses to Navi Mumbai Municipal Transport Corp in a couple of weeks, said company’s officials at a press meet... The Volvo hybrid solution claims to save at least 30 to 35% fuel and reduce 50% hazardous emissions in actual customer operations...

* Maharashtra - BEST mantra for buses: Keep it short and sweet


-- From electric trams to air-conditioned buses, BEST has come a long way since its inception in 1905. But eroding patronage, crawling traffic on Mumbai's roads and increasing number of buses getting rear-ended has resulted in the transport undertaking deciding to shorten the length of buses... BEST buses purchased henceforth will be 11 m in length compared to the existing 12 m. BEST buses have been involved in 26 fatal accidents in the past eight months alone... Traffic experts have welcomed the move. Ashok Datar, a traffic expert, said that reducing the length of buses will increase their manoeuvrability. "It may reduce some seats and might lead to a negligible revenue loss. On the other hand, shorter buses may lead to lesser accidents and quicker turnaround times leading to better frequency which is more important for the department," Datar added...

BUSMAKERS NEWS * India: The urban development ministry release funds for new fleet of buses

* Delhi - New bus orders dry up as states fail to utilise funds
-- After receiving the purchasing order, the urban development ministry had released the first instalment of Rs 884.21 crore for 7,509 buses to 18 states covering 114 cities in 2014-15. However, only 11 states reverted to the ministry with information on procurement of 2,288 buses. These states include West Bengal, Karnataka and Maharashtra... Senior officials of two of India’s largest bus makers, Ashok Leyland and Tata Motors, have said new bus orders from state transport undertakings (STUs) have nearly come to a standstill for about a year... According to data provided by the Society of Indian Automobile Manufacturers, sales of medium and heavy buses fell 22 per cent last year to 36,837 units, against 46,913 units sold in 2012-13. Sales to STUs form a critical part of the overall demand equation, otherwise reliant on private companies...

--The Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation's (MSRTC) new fleet of luxury buses under the brand name Shivneri is set to hit the city roads by Diwali... "Buying 38 buses from Scania Commercial Vehicles India Private Limited, a subsidiary of Scania Group from Sweden. The corporation has also placed another order of some 30 buses with the coach maker Volvo to widen the luxury bus coverage in the state" ... Volvo's luxury buses have been in the MSRTC's fleet for almost a decade... Since the last one decade, the MSRTC has been purchasing only Volvo buses, as its previous plan to shift to China-based buses failed...

Tata Motors rallies nearly 4% on supply order for 4000 buses

-- Tata Motors Ltd surged as much as 3.7 per cent in trade on Tuesday, after the nation's top commercial vehicle maker, has bagged orders for more than 4,000 buses from states transport authorities under the second phase of the union government's national urban renewal mission, ET reported quoting a top executive... The government's efforts to kick start activities in the infrastructure sector and an uptick in the economy have already started showing impact the medium and heavy commercial vehicle segment... Tata Motors, which sells every second truck and bus in the Indian market, is projecting sales in this segment to grow 15% to 112,180 units in the current fiscal year and 10-15% in the year after that, added the report...

* India - Original equipment manufacturers' bus market share likely to double on safety norms, GST
 -- Introduction of more safety parameters in manufacturing of buses and implementation of GST are likely to double the market share of original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) such as Tata Motors, Ashok Leyland, Mahindra & Mahindra, Swaraj and Eicher Motors in the bus manufacturing segment in the next four-five years. These companies expect a two-fold jump in their bus volumes, which is expected to put their market share in the range of 40/45% in the next four-five years from 20% now... The total annual bus sales volumes in India are between 70,000 and 76,000 units... Among the various segments in the bus manufacturing industry, OEMs' market share is expected to show exponential growth in the high tonnage bus since the present market share is at 10%. * Karnakata - Tata builds safest bus at Hubli plant 


  -- As of now, there are no regulations on bus manufacturers resulting in cramped journey, extreme heat, intolerable vibration, noise and poor safety standards... Tata Motors has started the manufacturing of new buses complying to the stringent norms on “uniform bus code” related to safety, design and comfort. The bus code, which aims to regulate the bus manfacturing, will come into force from April 1, 2015... “Tata Motors is giving utmost priority to safety and comfort of bus passengers by strictly complying to ‘uniform bus code’ norms. The Centre and the state governments have recognised this and placed orders for 3,465 buses with us under JNNURM-2. The company, which sells its products under the Bharat Benz brand, will cater to the city bus segment while its elder sibling Mercedes-Benz will continue in the luxury inter-city segment. A new Rs 425 crore bus plant, built within the premises of the truck making plant, will commence operations in the second quarter of next year... Buses will be offered in the nine tonne and above categories having front and rear engine configurations. The plant has an installed capacity of 1,500 units per annum in the first phase and can be expanded to 4,000 units per annum... The company says it has doubled its volumes in the past two years and aims to double it again next year. In the medium term, it targets to triple its market share to 20 per cent. It wants to fully utilise its initial installed capacity of 36,000 in two years...

According to VECV, new buses will meet the demands of the emerging premium market segment by providing enhanced passenger safety, fuel efficiency and comfort with superior aesthetics. Eicher Skyline Pro buses are available in school, staff and tourist variants with seating capacity ranging from 36 to 60 per the segment requirement... The company is currently in discussion with various state governments and city authorities to provide these buses for public transportation. Under Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission, (JNNURM) the Government has sanctioned purchase of buses for various mission. The company is set to add one big order of 560 buses from Bihar and another order of 65 buses from Indore. It has supplied more than 3000 buses to the various state transport undertakings. * Canada - Scottish bus maker to establish Ontario plant as part of Metrolinx deal

Toronto,Ontario,CAN -Canadian Manufacturing (CAN) -November 24, 2014: -- Metrolinx has signed a deal with Alexander Dennis Ltd. (ADL) to buy 253 double-decker buses that will see the Scotland-based bus maker establish a local chassis assembly facility near Toronto... According to Metrolinx, Ontario’s Crown transportation agency for the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA), it has reached an agreement with the company that will see the fully accessible, low floor, double-decker buses delivered to its GO Transit arm over five years beginning in 2016... Construction of the chassis facility is expected to begin in mid-2015 and the first order of buses is expected by 2016... 


* Russia - GAZ Group delivers 30 articulated LIAZ Euro-5 buses to Nizhny Novgorod

Nizhny Novgorod, Russia -Busworld (Belgium) -23 Nov 2014: -- The GAZ Group Bus Division recently delivered to the Nizhny Novgorod administration 30 low-floor articulated buses of the type LIAZ-621322, fitted with a Euro 5 driveline. All vehicles are adapted to passengers with limited mobility. Total cost of the buses is more than 300 million rubles... The new buses are equipped with a MAN diesel Euro 5 engine producing 290 hp, a six-speed ZF automatic gearbox and ZF axles, and a kneeling system in the air suspension, a mechanical ramp, communication buttons with the driver, a fire extinguishing system, air conditioning and ten CCTV cameras... The bus is designed to transport 146 people. There are 34 seats and an extra seat for people with limited mobility... The bus LiAZ-621322 is the first domestic low-floor articulated bus...

Hannover,Germany -PTI -28 Sep, 2014: -- Global commercial vehicle major Daimler is looking to replicate the success of its trucks business in India in the bus segment as well with its new bus plant in the country slated to be operational by second half of next year... Daimler's bus plant located in Oragadam, near Chennai is coming up at an investment of Rs 424 crore. It is expected to roll out buses in 9 tonne, 16 tonne and above 16 tonne categories in both front and rear engine configurations... Daimler will also export buses manufactured in India to other countries... The German commercial vehicle maker said it has sold over 15,000 trucks in India since September 2012. Daimler India exports India-made FUSO trucks in Sri Lanka, Bangladesh, Zimbabwe, Brunei, Zambia, Kenya and Tanzania...

* Andhra Pradesh - Govt may ask Volvo makers to put fuel tanks in centre to avoid mishaps

New Delhi,India -ZeeBis -July 27, 2014: -- In the backdrop of 52 people charring to death in accidents involving Volvo buses last year, the government may issue directives to manufacturers for minimising impact of such mishaps, including designing fuel tanks in centre and easily accessible emergency exits... The recommendations for change in bus designs has been given by a high-level panel probing two accidents involving Volvo buses last year... In the first accident at Mahbubnagar in Andhra Pradesh on October 30, 2013, 45 passengers were charred to death as a Volvo bus burst into flames after its fuel tank caught fire as the Hyderabad-bound bus from Bangalore hit against a culvert. The entire bus was engulfed in flames in a matter of minutes...

Transnational truck makers Daimler and Volvo are readying their product arsenal to include fully-built buses for India while more companies may join the segment, creating a buzz around buses... The Indian bus market, according to Daimler, is 40,000 units a year. And it is expected to double in a decade, making it the second largest behind China...  German giant, Daimler's Indian arm, Daimler India Commercial Vehicles, which is potentially financially sick, has announced an investment of Rs 425 crore in the bus-making unit in Oragadam near Chennai. The first buses are expected to roll out in the second quarter of 2015... Sweden's Volvo has announced the introduction of a UD bus range developed specifically for growth markets... In the 2013 calendar year, the market for heavy duty buses was 24,500 units, Volvo said. It expects this market to fall by 5-10% this year... Volvo Group has announced its plans to foray into the value segment (which is the upper end of the medium segment) of the bus market in India with the UD buses brand...

Mumbai,Maharashtra,India -Business Standard, by Swaraj Baggonkar -May 13, 2014: -- Makers of trucks and buses, have placed their bets on a series new model and face-lift launches lined up for the coming months... Truck and bus makers Tata Motors, VECV (an Eicher associate company) and Ashok Leyland will launch a variety of products from mini to mining trucks and luxury inter-city coaches... Two-wheeler makers, especially those with presence in the scooter segment, have escaped the slowdown, with overall sales rising seven per cent in 2013-14 to 14.8 million units. In this period, sales of commercial vehicles came down by 20 per cent and that of medium and heavy vehicles by 25 per cent...

* Andhra Pradesh - ‘Demand for new buses will continue’

Hyderabad,Andhra Pradesh,India -The Hindu, by S. SANDEEP KUMAR -May 9, 2014: -- If it’s public transportation, APSRTC buses is the beast taking in the most burden over the years. While the demand for buses is only expected to increase for the common capital, things are in a bad shape... While the capital continues to expand and new colonies mushroom on the fringes and other localities, residents have been demanding bus connectivity to major locations. Everyday 34 lakh passengers travel in buses and RTC authorities observe that once metro rail operations commence, there could be a ‘deflection’ of three to four lakh passengers... However, with increased urban migration, “demand for city buses will also continue to increase”, claims a senior RTC official. At least, 2,000 more new buses are needed in addition to the existing fleet of 3800-odd buses to meet fresh demands and improve services... But then, more buses mean new bus depots. Another 15 depots are required to add to the current 27 bus depots in APSRTC Greater Hyderabad zone jurisdiction. But, land acquisition remains a challenge... 


* Karnakata - Zhongtong Navigator half deck luxury bus spotted testing in India

Bangalore,Karnakata,India -Gaadi --5 May 2014: -- Hyderabad based Deccan Auto has entered into a technical collaboration with Zhongtong Bus Holding Co. Ltd., one of the major bus manufacturers of China... The company has started testing its Zhongtong Navigator rear engined multi-axle intercity coach in India. The 1.5 decker bus was spotted testing with Karnataka license plates on Bangalore-Hassan highway... The Navigator is available in 8-, 12- and 13.7-metre configurations and looks set to be India’s first 1.5 decker bus... The half deck bus can seat upto 59 passengers (thanks to additional seats above driver cabin) and has ample space for luggage... The luxurious Zhongtong Navigator comes equipped with individual head-rest mounted entertainment console, chemical toilet, coffee maker and refrigerator compartment...
