Rise in gas prices one cause of higher ridership trend

Genesee County,MI,USA -MLive.com/The Flint Journal, by James L. Smith -September 13, 2007: -- Some local school districts are reporting more students are taking the bus, possibly because of higher gas prices. Some, such as North Branch, have increased bus driver hours despite having fewer students than last year... Matt Hess, North Branch's director of operations said, "When the gas prices go higher than $2.70 a gallon, more kids are on the bus"... What astounded her more was when she learned that the overcrowding and standing room is allowed by state law for the first few weeks of school. The law says districts can transport standing students through the fourth Friday of the year... (Photo from Buffalo Schools Supt.)
