Activists Criticize * Taiwan - Taipei mass transport policy
Environmental protection advocates criticized Taipei Mayor Hau Lung-bin for failing to enact an efficient and complete mass transport policy and for failing to curb the growth of private automobiles and motorcycles in the capital city

Over the past six years, more and more motor vehicles are on the roads in Taipei City, Peng said, adding that the number of licensed automobiles totalled 734,000 this year, while that of licensed motorcycles hit more than 1.05 million. The figures show an average growth of over 9,400 automobiles and more than 12,600 motorcycles per year in the city... Attributing the growth to failure to increase the usage rate of public transport, Peng said the rate is now at around 45 percent. He accused the Taipei city government of bragging about 32.6 percent annual growth in terms of the passenger load on the mass rapid transport (MRT) system, while being reluctant to mention an annual drop of 9.5 percent in the passenger load of public buses...
