* China - School bus controversy

Compulsory safety standards for school buses that took effect nationwide late last week, has triggered controversy over its timing and the inconvenience the standards have caused for many students

Beijing,China -China Daily -12 Sept 2007: -- ... The standards are contained in a document on the safety standards for motor vehicles that were released by the State Standardization Administration. Having failed to meet the new safety specifications, 25,000 buses in Beijing stopped transporting students from Monday... The standards are indeed good as they require school buses not to allow students to stand in the passageways, there must be rails for seats along passageways, and every seat must have a safety belt. But they should have been gradually introduced so as to avoid causing chaos... The move immediately affected the children of migrant rural workers, about 1,000 are reported to have quit school. Their parents are anxiously looking for schools that can provide transport...
