OPINION * UK - Buses may be better than trains, says rail chief
Edinburgh,Scotland,UK -The Scotsman, by MURDO MACLEOD -14 Jan 2007: -- The head of the UK's rail infrastructure system has suggested that some railway services could be replaced by buses, or even taxis... John Armitt, the out-going chief executive of Network Rail, has claimed that transport planners should not always opt for a conventional train service in order to move passengers... Armitt said: "Simply asking to provide a railway, which in transport terms is not value for money, is probably not the best way forward. We have parts of the network where we have trains running around empty for most of the day"... Across the UK, there are seven routes, four in Scotland, where the typical user would do the environment less harm by driving a 4x4... And while the majority of train services in Scotland are still better for the environment than all the passengers driving off-road vehicles, some travellers might help the environment by opting for a small car rather than a train... While cars have become greener because of tough new rules, trains can only rival their on-road counterparts for greenness by packing in the passengers...
