Charleston,WV,USA -The Charleston Daily Mail: Editorial -Jan 12, 2007: -- CHARLESTON City Councilmen Harry Deitzler and John Miller have been after the Kanawha County Board of Education to order school buses with seat belts from now on... It sounds logical, but sometimes things are not as simple as they seem... The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration commented on seat belts on school buses in May 2006. Among its findings: "School buses are one of the safest forms of transportation in the United States," it said. "Every year, approximately 450,000 public school buses travel about 4.3 billion miles to transport 23.5 million children to and from school and school-related activities. Yet, on average, every year, six school-age children (throughout the U.S.) die in school bus crashes as passengers."... The agency said that because large school buses are heavier and distribute crash forces differently, the best way to protect their passengers is compartmentalization -- "a protective envelope consisting of strong, closely-spaced seats that have energy-absorbing seat backs."... A 2002 study found that lap belts could increase the risk of serious neck and abdominal injuries...
