* India - As ST buses get a makeover - 1,700 ordinary buses and 235 semi-luxury ones to roll out next year
Pune,India - The Pune Newsline, by Soniya Tripathi -Dec 27, 2006: -- A shiny red bus was a big draw at the recent Auto Expo 2006. The plush seats, low floor, rubber-cushioned windows, graphically designed logo on its sides, classy rear view mirrors, elegant luggage rack, extra boot space had eyes popping out. It was a complete makeover for the drab, dirty, rattling and plainly uncomfortable State Transport bus... Designed at the State Transport Central Workshop, Dapodi, the new bus will gradually replace the old red and yellow ST buses. An elated staff, under the guidance of works manager S P Jadhav, is looking forward to a final approval of the model by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation (MSRTC). While the prototype has an in-principle sanction, senior officials have suggested a few cosmetic changes...
* China - Beijing,2,200 buses for Games
Beijing,China -Chinadaily.com.cn, by Cruz Fang /Beijing Times -27 Dec 2006: -- Beijing may need as many as 2,200 buses for the 2008 Olympics, an official from the municipality government told Monday... The city's public traffic system has planned to supply 1,245 buses to run shuttle services to thread venues and the athlete's village, said Lu Yan, an official from Beijing Traffic Administration... The remaining 955, to be rented from tourist traffic companies, will transport athletes to venues, and run chartered missions for Games commercial partners, Lu said... Buses from the Olympic village to venues will leave every five or ten minutes and each bus will have a spare driver...
