Transport System - South Korea - Seoul’s Model for Others
Seoul,South Korea -Korea Times, by Kim Tong-hyung -25 June 2006: -- Newsis Seoul’s transit system is well-accepted by the general public, but administrators must find ways to improve the coordination between transport modes and improve traffic flow, said a senior official of the world’s largest transport industry body... However, Hans Rat, secretary general of the International Association of Public Transport (UITP), pointed out that Seoul must improve coordination between public transport modes, mostly between bus and subway networks, and car traffic, while also working to expand services to cover suburban needs... Reducing traffic congestion in the downtown areas is also a challenge for Seoul, said Rat, who believes that the city could follow the model of London, which introduced congestion charges for cars entering the center part of the city, resulting in a significant decrease in car traffic... "With higher oil prices and other economic situations, citizens must be ready to carry a larger financial burden than in the past in supporting their cities’ mass transit systems," he said...
