School Buses - UK - Use or lose, parents told
Lancashire,Preston,England,UK -Lancashire Evening Post -8 June 2006: -- Parents and children have been urged to use bus services – or lose them for good... Lancashire's transport boss issued the warning as he delayed a decision on the future of dozens of the county's bus services following public pressure... County Coun Tony Martin, cabinet member for sustainable development, also said school bus fares could be doubled to save routes... Lancashire County Council had proposed axing more than 50 of its subsidised bus services because of rising running costs and to compensate for an overspend of almost £2m... But the plan was revised following hundreds of complaints from parents, teachers and pupils who staged protests and signed petitions in opposition to the plans... A new recommendation, approved yesterday, means subsidised school buses must raise 40% of costs from fares to receive council support...
