Island,SC,USA -Hilton Head Island Packet -June 7, 2006: -- The Union of Concerned Scientists' report last month that South Carolina has the worst-polluting buses in the nation school is interesting but not surprising. The fleet is old. The average school bus is 14 years old, and 11 percent are more than 20 years old... But the state is on track to replace them in a 12-year cycle -- when lawmakers get around to approving the budget... South Carolina's fleet of 5,600 buses ranks as the nation's worst in hazardous emissions, such as soot and diesel exhaust, which can create health problems for all, but especially for children...
