City Bus Project - Uganda - Promises Less Traffic

Kampala,Uganda -The Monitor, by Nigel M. Nassar -June 15, 2006: -- In what comprised a blend of curiosity, anxiety and excitement, Pioneer Easy Bus the long-awaited urban bus project whose buses will soon do the city commuter service, was finally launched May 30, at Sheraton Gardens. Its entire budget was estimated at $35m about (Shs65.179 billion)... Basically, the city gets purged of all the existing taxi vans and replaced with 350 double and single-decker public transport buses... The buses run a scheduled commuter service to all parts of the city, modelled on the one currently operating in the United Kingdom... The double-decker bus carries 140 passengers, which is ten times the number carried by our 14-passenger taxi. This means there's more free space in the city, unlike today, where we have taxis climbing over pavements to find way. The promised buses are deemed to replace over 3,000 taxi minibuses, operating from over 900 bus stops in the city...
