The Quebec government announced on Wednesday that it was investing $30 million in an ambitious $73-million public-private project that plans to develop electric buses for the international mass-transportation market... The funding is intended to give the province a leg up over the competition and a chance to become an innovation leader in the burgeoning global electric-vehicle industry... The announcement was made by Quebec Premier, Jean Charest, Wednesday morning at the headquarters of St. Eustache-based Nova Bus, the main supplier of buses used on Montreal Island... A non-profit organization, Consortium Bus Electric, has been established to manage the project. The group plans to produce two different size aluminum electric-bus models...

Both send their power to the rear wheels by way of a five-speed automatic transmission...  The enormous cabin features four rows of seats that can accommodate up to 12 people. High Point,NC,USA -The Business Journal -February 16, 2011: -- Daimler Trucks North America, parent company of High Point-based Thomas Built Buses, will bring back 628 workers at its two Gaston County plants to meet demand for Freightliner trucks... The biggest group — 474 employees — will be added to the assembly plant in Mount Holly. The additional jobs will more than double the work force to about 900 at the facility... A Freightliner parts and logistics plant in Gastonia is getting another 154 jobs...  Daimler Trucks assembles its over-the-road tractor trucks in Rowan County... Chicago,ILL,USA -Solar Hybrid Bus -October 6, 2010: -- To help transportation companies nationwide comply with strict anti-idling laws, Gary Bauer of BAUER’S INTELLIGENT TRANSPORTATION in San Francisco introduced a bus featuring the new Solar Hybrid Bus Powering System at the BusCon Conference & Expo last week...   The Solar Bus consists of four thin film solar panels that run the length of the bus and charge an on-board battery bank. When the bus engine is off, the batteries power the air-conditioning and wireless connectivity equipment, enabling the buses to effectively meet anti-idling standards without compromising passenger comfort...   Bauer said the new bus may also provide a savings of up to $14,000 in fuel per bus per year and reduce up to 345,000 grams of NOx per bus per year while conforming to the Airborne Toxic Control Measure. The law states that a vehicle cannot idle for more than five minutes, and only 30 seconds when parked within 100 feet of a school... Warrenville,ILL,USA -Fleet Owner -Oct 4, 2010: -- A new small shuttle bus from Navistar’s IC Bus unit is touted as an integrated product that offers a “one-stop-shop” approach to bus operators... The concept behind the approach is to provide “bumper-to-bumper” coverage for customers. This will allow them to purchase, finance, and maintain their bus from one company, IC Bus. Parts, service and warranty coverage are part of the package... The AC Series features a lifecycle about twice as long as similar shuttle buses, IC said. It shares a platform with Navistar’s commercial TerraStar truck and features frame rails rated to 80,000 psi. There is a full-tilt hood to allow for easy access to the V8 engine... The engine is a 220 hp., 6.4-liter MaxxForce 7 with a 28,000-psi high-pressure common-rail fuel system, dual sequential turbocharger and high-strength compacted graphite iron block. It is matched to an Allison 1000 Series transmission. The MaxxForce 7 uses Navistar’s Advanced EGR emissions technology to meet EPA 2010 emissions regulations. New York,NY,USA -engadget, by Darren Murph -Dec 12, 2009: -- Capstone's CMT-380 has proven that turbines, batteries and an unconditional love for Ma Earth actually can get along within the confines of an automobile, and now it looks as if the same type of technology will be touching a lot more lives in and around New York City... DesignLine, a New Zealand-based company with an "experimental turbine hybrid" of the same name, is currently being used in three buses in Brooklyn and Manhattan, and unlike petrol-powered alternatives, these are said to be as "quiet as a tomb." They're also environmentally friendly, omitting internal combustion altogether and relying on spinning turbines to recharge a Li-ion battery that powers the wheels. If the trial goes over well, 87 more of the $559,000 buses could be ushered into operation, and you'll know one's coming due to the shocking absence of creaking, sputtering and black haze rounding the bend to your stop...

The bus is unique in that it employs Daimler's hydrogen powered fuel cell along with their diesel electric hybrid powertrain called Citaro G Blue Tec Hybrid. This bus combines both advanced technologies that are separately in use by Daimler into one bus... Bus Makers * India - Worried over States missing deadline for buying vehicles

Several still in process of issuing bids and finalising tenders

New Delhi,India -The Hindu Business Line, by Priyanka Vyas -May 23, 2009: -- Commercial vehicle majors are wary about the State governments meeting the deadline of procuring buses under the Jawaharlal Nehru National Urban Renewal Mission by the end of next month... Of the 14,400 buses that various State governments were to purchase as a part of the stimulus package announced in January, 7,800 units have been ordered so far... Even with the Central Government officials asking the state government officials concerned to speed up the process, several States are lagging behind. Industry officials feel there could be a time lag of five months before actual deliveries could start taking place... Till now, States such as Andhra Pradesh, Karnataka, Kerala, Maharashtra and West Bengal have finalised contracts. Several others are still in the process of issuing bids and finalising tenders...

Abidjan, Ivory Coast -AfricaNews, by Kingsley Kobo -17 January 2009: -- The engineering arm of Ivory Coast's national transport firm, Sotra, has locally manufactured three brand new buses in the country. Sotra, imports most of its vehicles from Europe and Asia over decades, but decided to adventure in local production that culminated in their first boat-bus in 2003... The public has highly lauded the company’s initiative with some saying it would help the country and private individuals cut cost on expensive foreign vehicles. In 2005, Sotra announced that it was embarking on a “complete bus project” – dubbed building of buses by Ivorians for Ivorians. Our correspondent said the launching of Sotra’s first three buses came as a surprise to many some of whom were successfully transported across Abidjan, the Ivorian capital...

Yutong signed a deal with Chilean distributors in October 2007 on export of 70 ZK6130H buses. One month later, 400 more ZK6130H were added to their deal by the two sides... The brakes on 80 new Volvo buses have been failing randomly for short bursts in a string of incidents that have injured passengers and placed the public at risk

Mount Isa,Queensland,Australia -The North West Star, by LINTON BESSER -20 June 2008: -- ... according to scores of driver reports seen by the Herald... Drivers warned State Transit Authority management as early as last September that the brakes were not slowing the buses properly before suddenly locking up... But the buses, each worth $650,000, have continued to ply routes along the northern beaches, in the eastern suburbs and along Victoria Road. The drivers are demanding the buses be withdrawn from service... A revenue protection officer was knocked to the floor of a Volvo bus that abruptly locked up last week. At least two passengers have been injured in similar incidents... Volvo and the State Transit Authority say the buses are safe and blame drivers for not adapting to them. But the buses have been in service for 18 months, and complaints have intensified... He said he was aware of the reports dating back to last year, but that numerous tests - including a 53-day trial - had been unable to replicate the problem... Late yesterday, the transit authority agreed to a union request to shorten the trial to 45 days...

* India - Tatas plan hybrid Indica, buses

New Delhi,India -Press Trust Of India -February 10, 2008: -- Tata Motors is now embarking on another path-defining move to come out with electric and hybrid vehicles in both passenger, including its flagship Indica, and commercial segments... According to industry sources, the company is working on blended fuel, partial and complete hybrids, electric vehicles and hydrogen-powered vehicles, some of which could be commercially produced as early as 2011... The company is working on a petrol-electric hybrid vehicle capable of delivering about 20 km per litre complying with BS III and IV emission norms that could be applicable to Indica and its variants and also a possible adaptation of the concept to other platforms in future... Moreover, the sources said Tata Motors is also working on five prototype electric vehicle using lithium ion batteries to be produced on the Indica platform, which could have a range of 200 kilometres per charge... Chennai,India -The Times of India -25 Mar 2008: -- Lord Swraj Paul-promoted Caparo India, on Monday said that it has entered into a technical agreement with Hyundai Motor Corporation of Korea for the manufacture of fully-assembled luxury buses in India... The CKD kits will come from Korea and assembled in India. In all 1,500 buses will be made every year and we will need some 20 acres and a couple of hundred crore as investment. The buses would be badged Hyundai - Caparo... The buses would be made for sale in India. Initially three variants fitted with engines ranging from 320 HP to 380 HP would be assembled. Stuttgart,Germany -The FINANCIAL (Tbilisi,Georgia) --12 March 2008: -- Worldwide sales by Daimler Buses in 2007 totaled 39,000 units from the Mercedes-Benz, Setra, and Orion brands, which corresponds to an eight-percent increase from the high sales figure recorded in the prior year... Bus chassis increased its sales by 9.5% to 26,600 (2006: 24,300) units, while complete buses business achieved a sales increase of 4% to 12,400 (2006: 11,900) units...


* Germany - Daimler Plan to Sell More Buses in China, India and Russia


Stuttgart,Germany -Agence France-Presse -March 13, 2008: -- German heavy vehicle manufacturer Daimler said March 12 it planned to expand its bus division in emerging markets such as Russia and India to boost global sales... In Russia, "we are considering local production with the heavy truck division," the statement quoted bus unit head Harald Landmann as saying. In China, "we are cooperating with partner licensees," he added. In India, Daimler established a partnership in September. But a spokeswoman said: "We are looking for new partners" as well...
