BUSES STRIKE * India: By Ranchi Bus Owners Association

* Jharkhand: Transport authority trims halt time, buses go off roads

-- Thousands of commuters across Jharkhand on Thursday had a harrowing time after more than 1,000 buses went off the roads to protest against a regional transport authority’s decision to curtail the halt time of buses to pick up passengers from bus stands... The South Chotanagpur Regional Transport Authority on January 28 issued a directive, saying that big buses plying from Khadgarha and Itki terminals in Ranchi will get 5 minutes while small buses 3 minutes to pick up passengers. Earlier, time for picking up passengers was 10 minutes and 5 minutes for big and small buses respectively... Krishna Mohan Singh of Ranchi Bus Owners Association said a 32-seater bus on an average takes three minutes to pick up six to eight passengers... The strike has inconvenienced commuters, especially daily wage workers, most of who come to Ranchi from Khunti, Lohardaga and Ramgarh every day in search of job... Regional transport authority secretary Rajesh Kumar Barware said, “Stoppage time at bus stand has been rescheduled because of the rising number of buses. However, we will discuss the issue with bus operators on Friday” ...

BUSES STRIKE * India: Punjab & Odisha

* Punjab - Private bus owners go on strike in 

-- Private bus operators in Punjab on Saturday went on a strike to protest against the "haste" shown by police in registering cases against drivers and conductors without proper investigation... The move comes a day after a case was registered against a private bus conductor by police on a complaint filed by two minor sisters who alleged that they were harassed by the conductor in Muktsar district... Bus drivers and conductors of private buses held protests at various places including Muktsar, Bathinda, Faridkot, Amritsar, Patiala, Rajpura, Khanna, Jalandhar in the state and blocked roads leading to bus stands, causing traffic jam... Bus owners were also protesting against the damage to their vehicles by protesters on the roads, alleging that police had failed to prevent such incidents... With about 4,500 private buses remaining off the roads across the state, commuters had harrowing time because of the strike... However, state-owned Punjab Roadways and PRTC were plying their buses...

* Odisha - Pvt buses to stay off roads from June 5


-- The Odisha Private Bus Owners' Association on Friday threatened to go on an indefinite strike from June 5 if their demands are not fulfilled... The decision followed the rise in petrol and diesel prices by Rs 3.13 and Rs 2.71 a litre, respectively... In October last year, the state government said it will take a decision after the technical committee submits its report on the quantum of downward revision of bus fares."The committee, which visited Kerala and Maharashtra, has submitted its report, but the government is yet to introduce it" ... More than 15,000 private buses ply across the state every day...

STRIKE * India: Bengal Bus Syndicate´s

* West Bengal - Fare war's back: Brace for bus strike from June 25-27

(Photo from NDTV: Bus strike in West Bengal) Kolkata,W.Bengal,India -Times of India -June 17, 2014: -- Private bus and minibus operators have called a three-day strike from June 25 demanding an immediate fare hike... Many operators have pulled buses off the roads over the last couple of years citing unmanageable losses because the state has not matched fares with diesel price hikes. Commuters may face flash strike calls with no regard for their crippling effect on the city... Transport minister Madan Mitra said rolls out the entire state fleet, it will be of little help if private buses stay away. Transport department's records show that government buses collectively carry only 15.60 lakh passengers while private buses carry 62.5 lakh passengers daily. As things stand now, 35,000 buses and mini-buses, 30,000 taxis and 16,000 luxury taxis will be off the roads for three busy weekdays in hot and humid June... Although diesel price has gone up several times, the state did not increase bus fares in tune with the hikes, said Dipak Sarkar, vice-president of Bengal Bus Syndicate...

* Maharashtra - School bus owners in Pune to go on strike from July 1

(Photo DNA) Pune,Maharashtra,India -Agency DNA -16 June 2014: -- School kids will have to bear the brunt in the new academic session, when over 3,500 private school buses will be off the road as the Pune bus owners association (PBOA) go on an indefinite strike from July 1. This is after the Pune Regional Transport Officer (RTO), on Friday said they would crack down on school buses not adhering to safety norms and don’t have valid permits... Members of PBOA allege that private schools are being lackadaisical about forming school bus committees and are not striking agreements with private buses... Secretary of Pune bus owners association, Kiran Desai, said, “If we get the agreement we will have to pay Rs100 per year per seat instead of Rs1,750 we are paying now. Instead of taking action against the school bus owners, the RTO should ensure that schools sign the agreement” ... Desai further added, “From July 1 we will park all 3,500 buses at the RTO premises and hand over the keys to RTO officers and call for an indefinite strike” ... Secretary of the school bus committee, deputy RTO, Anil Patil said,”We have given enough time to schools and bus owners to sign an agreement. We are not going to refrain from taking action against school buses that are not abiding by safety norms and don’t have a valid permits” ...

Dublin,Ireland -Irish Trucker News (UK) -10 May 2013: -- Bus Éireann passengers could be hit by travel disruption in the near future, the company has warned and this could lead to major traffic disruption in Dublin city... It comes after the company insisted it will press ahead with the implementation of controversial cost reduction measures... Bus Éireann warned that it is highly likely that it will breach Section 40 of the Companies Act if essential savings contained in a recent Labour Court recommendation are not implemented. In February, the Labour Court recommended a number of measures that will deliver approximately €5m in payroll savings... Bus Éireann said that it intends to implement those measures from Sunday...  However staff are threatening strike action if the cuts go ahead...

Mumbai,India -The Times of India, by Shreya Bhandary -Feb 1, 2012: -- School bus owners have once again threatened to go on an indefinite strike, claiming that this time, they will stick to their plan...  On Monday, the School Bus Owners' Association (SBOA) called for a state-wide indefinite strike, starting from February 6, until the state government acknowledges their problems and the changes that they had asked for in the School Bus Safety Policy...   The SBOA has asked for certain changes in the school bus policy, including the rule regarding the compulsory inclusion of two fire extinguishers inside every bus (they demand this be changed to one), and rules pertaining to the age of buses being used, etc....

Spate of assaults have drivers demanding more security guards at terminals

Helsinki,Finland -The HELSINGIN SANOMAT -10 Feb 2011: -- Bus drivers in the Helsinki region are demanding more security measures to counter a recent surge in assaults... If the action is implemented, buses in the Helsinki region would stop operating on Friday and Saturday evenings at 9:00 PM through the following morning... The ultimatum was issued at a meeting of regional bus drivers on Wednesday... The drivers are demanding more guards to protect them and passengers, especially at key Helsinki bus terminals of Elielinaukio, Rautatientori, and Kamppi... Jari Korhonen, head shop steward of the Veolia bus company, said that all drivers in the Helsinki region were represented at Wednesday’s meeting. He pointed out that the drivers have been demanding more security measures for years... * Sri Lanka -Route 138 strike called off Wednesday

Horana,Shri Lanka -The Daily Mirror, by Olindhi Jayasundere -9 February 2011: -- Private bus operators called off their two day strike this morning and resumed services of buses starting from Horana after the Passenger Transport Authority promised to resolve the problem of two controversial permits. Lanka Private Bus Owners Association said that the 138 routes strike was called off...   Private Bus owners were on strike due to permits given to two buses plying the Horana-Karanda route and the Bulathsinhala-Pettah route, which the association claimed ‘illegal’...  The association’s President Gemunu Wijeyratne said, that more than Rs.900,000 was lost by the Government as a result of the issuing of two permits...   He said that in the past one and a half years private buses have gone on strike on more than 100 occasions due to what he referred to as the authorities’ lack of concern...  He said that the Western Province Passenger Transport Authority Chairman was responsible for the issuing of illegal permits and that private bus owners would take whatever necessary measures to remove the Chairman from his position if the issuing of illegal permits continued... * South Africa - Metrobus drivers in Johannesburg will go on strike against a new shift schedule on Wednesday afternoon, says the bus company

Johannesburg,SA -The Times Live -9 Feb 2011: -- Buses throughout Johannesburg were operating normally on Wednesday morning... "The strike is scheduled to commence at 2pm," spokeswoman Esther Dreyer said in a statement... "Some bus operators belonging to SA Municipal Workers' Union are unhappy about the recently introduced driver shifts implemented from the 6th of December 2010" ... In this instance, bus operators have to get used to their new routes, bus stops and passengers. Passengers also have to get used to their new drivers and regrettably commuters will experience inconveniences... Dreyer said when changes were introduced, there were bound to be initial hiccups... "However, the long-term benefits of a sustainable bus service and a sustainable public transport system in Johannesburg far outweigh these short-term teething problems" ... Commuters were advised to seek alternative transport...


* Bermuda - BIU sets conditions for end of bus strike

Hamilton,Bermuda -The Royal Gazette, by Nadia Arandjelovic -Feb 10, 2010: -- Government is expected to respond this evening to a call by the Bermuda Industrial Union to reinstate a sacked bus driver in return for calling off today's bus strike... Bermuda Industrial Union president Chris Furbert, told The Royal Gazette tonight that the union was seeking the reinstatement of the driver, but would accept that he be suspended for one month and would have to serve a six month probationary period... Drivers have also agreed to forego their pay for their strike action today if the proposal is accepted, he said... It is not known if the buses will come back on the roads later today if the deal is accepted...

The reason for the strike is the increase of route permit charges and other license fees by the Western Province Passenger Transport Authority... The private bus owners have given time to the authorities until Monday to revoke their decision... The Chairman of the Association Gemunu Wijerathnam says that the bus owners will seek the support of the long distance bus operators for the strike... Private buses are the major passenger transport service of Sri Lanka...

LOCK OUT * India - Chandigarh school buses continue strike for fourth day

Bus operators of private schools in the city continued their strike for the fourth day Monday against a government order making it mandatory for all such buses to install speed governors

Chandigarh,India -Breaking News 24/7 -July 13, 2009: ... Over 500 privately owned school buses were off the roads for the fourth day, posing problems to parents and school children... Around 50,000 students, studying in nearly 60 private schools here have been affected by this strike... The administration, which had set July 10 as the deadline for all buses to install speed governors, extended the last date to Sep 30... BUS' OWNERS STRIKE * Sri Lanka - Bus crew must follow NTC rules, says Director General



Colombo,Sri Lanka -The Sri Lanka Daily News -3 April 2009: -- National Transport Commission (NTC) Director-General, M. A. Jiffrey, commenting on the ongoing inter-provincial private bus strike, said private bus drivers and conductors should carry out their duties in keeping with the rules and regulations of the NTC... He also condemned this strike as unreasonable, saying it has been launched at the behest of private bus owners... Inter-provincial buses, bus drivers and conductors are registered under the NTC. Failure to follow rules will result in the imposition of fines charged from bus owners. * Sri Lanka - Private Bus Owners’ Assn. plans legal action against vandals


Colombo,Sri Lanka -The Sri Lanka Daily News, by Irangika RANGE -4 April 2009: -- The Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association (LPBOA) is planning to take legal action against the party which damaged 54 buses that operated despite the strike... LPBOA President Gemunu Wijerathne told a press-briefing in Colombo yesterday that the strike by certain inter-provincial private bus operators was unsuccessful owing to the LPBOA and the State deploying more buses to prevent a breakdown in the passenger transport... He urged the Government and Minister, Dullas Alahapperuma, to take action to stop fraud and corruption by several groups in the industry... Wijerathne thanked bus operators and owners who operated buses during the strike...
