* West Bengal - Fare war's back: Brace for bus strike from June 25-27
(Photo from NDTV: Bus strike in West Bengal) Kolkata,W.Bengal,India -Times of India -June 17, 2014: -- Private bus and minibus operators have called a three-day strike from June 25 demanding an immediate fare hike... Many operators have pulled buses off the roads over the last couple of years citing unmanageable losses because the state has not matched fares with diesel price hikes. Commuters may face flash strike calls with no regard for their crippling effect on the city... Transport minister Madan Mitra said rolls out the entire state fleet, it will be of little help if private buses stay away. Transport department's records show that government buses collectively carry only 15.60 lakh passengers while private buses carry 62.5 lakh passengers daily. As things stand now, 35,000 buses and mini-buses, 30,000 taxis and 16,000 luxury taxis will be off the roads for three busy weekdays in hot and humid June... Although diesel price has gone up several times, the state did not increase bus fares in tune with the hikes, said Dipak Sarkar, vice-president of Bengal Bus Syndicate...
