Durban,KwaZulu-Natal,SA -BSLive, by NCE MKHIZE -Enero 05 2015: -- A five-day-old strike by about 700 bus drivers has disrupted the travelling schedules of thousands of commuters and holiday makers going to beaches and surrounding areas in Durban... The drivers started an impromptu strike on new year’s eve after Transnat failed to pay their salaries and bonuses into their accounts. Two years ago Transnat, whose executives include President Jacob Zuma’s nephew, the taxi baron Mandla Gcaba, was contracted to run the bus services. But it has since had to deal with a number of stoppages and strikes when workers and drivers went unpaid. In mid-October the bus service ground to a halt for days after fuel ran out... The fleet of more than 700 buses are used by thousands of workers, schoolchildren and students travelling to and from the Durban city centre and surrounding suburbs and townships. During the holidays additional buses ferry holiday makers and residents to popular beaches... Nhlanhla Bhengu, a bus driver and a member of Transport and Allied Workers Union of SA (Tawusa), said members decided to embark on a strike after their December pay and bonuses were not paid on December 31...

STRIKE * Hungary - Budapest Public Transport Strike Boosts Cab Revenue

Budapest,Hungary -The Wall Street Journal (USA), by Veronika Gulyas -January 12, 2010: -- Public transport company BKV in Hungary’s capital city Budapest began an open-ended strike early Tuesday morning. As usual, the strike followed an unresolved dispute over wages and perks between the company and the majority of its trade unions... Although the strike has not affected all transportation — subcontractor-operated buses, the underground and trolley buses are running — the capital city is indeed in a state of chaos as service on most bus and tram lines is unavailable... Desperate times call for desperate measures: Some motorists have helped out commuters stuck at empty bus stops, while other residents choose to get on their bikes... At the negotiating table, trade unions are insisting on renewing a collective contract that expired at the end of 2009, while BKV has been offering similar conditions to the earlier framework, only under general wage regulations... STRIKES * USA - CTA bus drivers union weighs strike to protest layoffs

CTA bus drivers union weighs strike to protest layoffs

Chicago,ILL,USA -Chicago Now, by Kevin O'Neil -4 Nov 2009: -- The CTA bus drivers union is considering a strike to protest planned layoffs of about 1,800 members of the Local 241 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, according to a CBS2 Chicago report... The union president, Darrell Jefferson, goes on to insist the CTA's budget deficit is actually $500 million, not the $300 million cited by the CTA. But the union will continue to resist any givebacks, including furlough days... Furthermore, Jefferson says: "Metropolitan Transit Act says, in section 28, that management and exempt people should make up only 3 percent of the total number of employees. We estimate CTA being somewhere like 15 to 18 percent. Laying off people and you're still gonna be heavy in management, I think you're asking for a war more than a layoff"... So, we'll have to see how this war plays out...(Photo from photobucket: scattered frog Chicago Marshall Field Protest BusDriver)

* Pennsilvania - Fire worsens 2nd day of Philly transit strike

Philadelphia,PENN,USA -AP, by PATRICK WALTERS & Martha Raffaele& & Ron Todt -5 Nov 2009: -- Commuters biked, walked, juggled carpool schedules and hitched rides as the city's transit system ground to a near halt for a second day Wednesday, a rush worsened when a regional rail train caught fire... The strike also affects buses that serve the suburbs in Bucks, Montgomery and Chester counties... The strike forced some employers to scramble, too... Cisco Navarro, 41, a part-time night clerk at the UPS distribution facility in South Philadelphia, got to work via a patchwork bus system that UPS set up by hiring bus companies... His biggest challenge, he said, was getting the buses to stop. Employees have to show company IDs to get on the bus, but drivers can't tell who is a UPS employee from a distance — and sometimes, he said, they don't stop..."You're waving your arms," he said, adding that he has now borrowed a UPS hat. "I need to bring cheerleaders"... (Photo by Matt Rourke/AP : Stranded commuters are loaded on buses near the scene of a train fire in Philadelphia, Wednesday, Nov. 4, 2009)

Cape Town,South Africa -News 24, by Verashni Pillay -Feb 13, 2009: -- Violence on the third day of a minibus taxi strike in Cape Town appeared to be abating, with police reporting no new incidents of violence on Friday... Special police units and metro police were deployed to quell violence and the army was on standby, Senior Superintendent Billy Jones told News24... A source in the taxi industry who wanted to remain anonymous said however that taxi drivers wanting to operate were still facing death threats, violence and intimidation from "criminal elements" taking advantage of the strike.. "No taxis can operate," said the high-ranking taxi industry official. He described how one taxi driver near Wynburg had been forced out of his vehicle and stripped naked... National Taxi Alliance (NTA) members have prevented taxis and some buses from taking people to work. Their rivals, the Western Cape Taxi council have been intimidated into suspending services.. * Mexico - Tijuana bus drivers snarl traffic to protest diesel prices

Tijuana,Mexico -The Sign On San Diego Union-Tribune, by Omar Millan Gonzalez -February 16, 2009: -- Hundreds of public bus drivers virtually stopped traffic through this city's main thoroughfares Monday to protest the cost of diesel, which has gone up 50 percent in the last six months... The current price of diesel means that public transport providers can't break even on the fares they collect, said Virgilio Diaz, president of the Mass Transit Alliance of Baja California, which had 447 buses in the protest... In Mexico, drivers rent their buses from companies and pay for fuel themselves. However, the city must approve any fare increase for the 4,000 public buses and calafias, or shuttle vans, that move 750,000 passengers daily... The demonstration in Tijuana by drivers was part of nationwide protest Monday in major Mexican cities. The drivers are calling on the federal government to lower diesel prices or offer their sector a subsidy...

* India - Bus operators’ to protest today

Thiruvananthapuram,Kerala,India -The Kerala On Line -17 Feb 2009: -- The All Kerala Bus Operators Organisation will observe today as ‘betrayal day’ to protest against the ‘unilateral reduction of bus fares’ on the basis of fall in diesel price alone. It demanded that the decision be revoked as prices of spare parts, oil and tyre had not come down... The minimum charges for super express services was reduced by 33 per cent, super fast services by 20 per cent, fast passenger by 10 per cent and ordinary, city and city fast services by 12.5 per cent, though the National Transportation Planning and Automation Centre had recommended lower rate cuts... Noting that the reduction in price of diesel was marginal, the Minister urged the Central government to reduce it further in tune with the international prices for crude oil, which had dropped by 79 per cent. The price of diesel should be cut by at least 55 per cent, on par with the reduction effected for aviation fuel...
