Bus Rapid Transit project * USA - Feds recommend $25 million for AC Transit bus

AC Transit's plans for a $216 million speedy bus service in Oakland and San Leandro

Oakland,CAL,USA -San Jose Mercury News, by Denis Cuff -19 Feb 2011: -- AC Transit's plans for a $216 million speedy bus service in Oakland and San Leandro cleared another hurdle Tuesday when federal transit officials recommended awarding $25 million to the project... Buses would run frequently along a 14.4-mile busy corridor with bus-only lanes developed along a portion of the route. Stoplights would be timed to favor buses. Some of the passenger loading and unloading areas would occur in bus stations built in street medians... The two-county bus system last week submitted its project environmental impact statement to the Federal Transit Administration, which must certify the document adequately considers project environmental impacts -- like loss of on-street parking spaces -- and possible mitigation such as acquiring new parking spaces nearby... The bus system also must reach agreement with Oakland and San Leandro city officials on final details of the project, ranging from new stoplights to protect pedestrians to the length of bus-only lanes...
