* Dubai - RTA buys 518 feeder buses to serve metro

Dubai -The Arabian Business, by Rob Morris -29 June 2009: -- Transport chiefs in Dubai on Monday announced a deal to buy 518 buses to serve passengers travelling on the Dubai Metro... The AED1.9bn deal will also include an eight-year maintenance contract for the vehicles which will ferry metro customers to and from stations in the emirate. A senior RTA official said that the buses would cover all the stations... The red line of the $4.2bn project is scheduled to start operating on September 9...

* Thailand - Cabinet gives NESDB 30 more days to study bus project

Bangkok,Thailand -The Bangkok Post -30 June 2009: -- The cabinet has approved the National Economic and Social Development Board's request for another 30 days to study the Transport Ministry's plan to lease 4,000 NGV buses... He said the 30 deadline was final. No further extension would be allowed... The NESDB presented a report but it did not give a direct answer to the question that was posed - was leasing, outright purchase or hire-purchase the best way to acquire Bangkok's new commuter bus fleet, and at what cost... The prime minister said the board made some suggestion but also said it needed more information from the Transport Ministry, including the routes the buses would operate on and projections for the number of passengers... Transport Minister, Sohpon Zarum, has pushed hard for the leasing of the 4,000 new buses, which he argues would not only improve the service but pull the Bangkok Mass Transit Authority (BMTA) out of its financial quagmire...
