AFTER DRIVERS' PROTESTS * South Africa - Company terminates bus service

Durban,South Africa -IOL, by Arthi Sanpath, Bheki Mbanjwa and Dasen Thathiah -June 30 2009: -- City officials have yet to reveal how they plan to transport thousands of commuters who rely on the city bus service, after Monday's sudden termination - a day earlier than planned... The decision came after the bus driver protest action on Monday morning when key intersections of the city were blocked off, causing traffic chaos... The action by the bus drivers came a day before beleaguered bus company Remant Alton was due to cease operations after declaring to the city it was no longer financially viable to operate the service... Bus drivers blocked the intersections of AB Xuma (Commercial) and Yusuf Dadoo (Grey) and Monty Naicker (Pine) and Chris Ntuli (Old Dutch) streets... The bus drivers would be charged with obstruction of traffic, which carries a R1 500 fine... Also, as some of the buses had to be towed back to the depot, a further cost of R500 was incurred... Khuzwayo said that if the drivers were found, they would possibly have to pay the fine, but that depended on agreements between the driver and the company... (Photo wsm.ie)
