GPS * Ireland & UK - €4m system will update bus arrival times
Dublin,Ireland -The Irish Independent, by Paul Melia -January 02 2009: -- Commuters left standing for ages in the cold will get relief with the roll-out in the New Year of a new system telling them when their bus will arrive... Bus Eireann is to unveil a real-time information system for every route it operates across the country, with commuters able to find out the bus time by text or online... Using a global positioning system, the transport company will be able to identify the location of all buses in the fleet at all times, and take into account traffic jams and roadworks... The Automatic Vehicle Location (AVL) system, which was tested during 2008, allows customers to access real-time arrival and departure information... The €4m system will be fully rolled out by the middle of the year, when passengers will be able to receive real-time information on the next three buses to arrive at any bus stop in its network via the Web and SMS...
* UK - Spy in the sky system will track 400 buses
Stoke-on-Trent,England,UK -Stoke & Staffordshire - January 02, 2009: -- Satellite tracking devices are being installed in buses to revolutionise public transport... Bus companies in Stoke-on-Trent and Staffordshire are working with regeneration leaders to install the devices in up to 400 vehicles over the next two years... The high-tech initiative will enable bus passengers to obtain up-to-the-minute information on bus itineraries at bus stops, online or on their mobile phones... It will also help operators keep track of their fleets and adjust timetables to allow for delays... Bus drivers will be able to use the technology to their advantage – the automatic vehicle location devices will feature a traffic signal override function that can relay a signal to switch lights to green if a bus is behind schedule...
