* New Zealand - Boarders and benefits
A trial letting Christchurch buses stop in the middle of the road to let passengers on and off should help ease traffic congestion, despite misinformation to the contrary
Waipara,New Zealand -The Press, by RICHARD WEST (the Christchurch City Council Project Manager for Bus Prioritisation) -7 August 2007: -- ... Christchurch's love affair with the car is showing little sign of slowing and, as the city grows, so does congestion... The forecast is for a 160 per cent increase in traffic congestion along the main corridors over the next 15 years... Studies show congestion has a very negative effect on environmental sustainability, economic development and health... We have to start facing the fact that this problem is real and will not go away on its own... The way we use our roads and a modal shift out of cars is the only solution, but we need to act now... We must manage and reduce the rapidly increasing number of cars using the city roads. Public transport and bus priority are not new concepts and have been tried and successfully tested in many countries around the world... (Picture by redbus.nz: City Flyer bus service )
