The new Smartcard for bus travelBarrow-in-Furness,Lake District,UK -The NW Evening Mail -15 May 2007: -- Bus passengers in Millom will be the next to benefit from a hi-tech travel card system... The cards feature a photograph of the holder and are loaded with data which identifies their concessionary fare entitlement. When swiped on the vehicle’s ticket machine for the first time, the card is converted electronically to the new technology. The smart card then automatically prompts the ticket machine to calculate the correct concessionary entitlement and the right fare for the journey... This data is later sent to the relevant district council, which can calculate the money due to each bus operator...
