City Tour * Turkey - A whirlwind using public transport
Istanbul,Turkey -The Turkish Daily News, by ŞAFAK TİMUR -May 19, 2007: -- A part of the daily routine of almost everyone who lives in stoic Istanbul, moving about is often just short of torture, snarled traffic a symbol of life in Europe's largest and most sprawling metropolis. But there's another side to this ritual of agony: the array of choices... You want grumpy conversation in the morning, pile into a dolmuş, the locally invented version of a shared taxi... If Bosporus breezes seem a good way to start the day, hop on a ferry... If ultra-modern speed and efficiency is what you seek (and you are lucky enough to live near the pitifully short, four-stop subway system) hop on Europe's newest metro... Care to imagine yourself at St Moritz? There's even a ski lift that you can take from the district of Maçka to a stop near the Hyatt hotel just off of Taksim Square. OK, the view of abandoned gas works and an aging football stadium may not compare with the Alps. But you have to give credit to some city official who thought up the odd lift in the sky and some odd moment in the history of city planning...
