But city cops union threatens to sue
Detroit,MI,USA -The Detroit Free Press, by ZACHARY GORCHOW -Jan 18, 2007: -- With the recent spikes in crime, Detroit police have focused their efforts on improving safety in the neighborhoods, meaning the end of once longtime functions for the department, like policing city buses... And that's given the Wayne County Sheriff's Office an opportunity to step in... A proposal by the Detroit Department of Transportation to have sheriff's deputies police city buses is the latest example of how local governing bodies are increasingly turning to the sheriff's office for help. But the DDOT proposal, which is scheduled to be discussed today before the City Council, is drawing strong opposition from the police officers union... Marty Bandemer, president of the Detroit Police Officers Association, is threatening to sue the city if it hires the sheriff's office to police the buses -- a move DDOT wants to make because officials there say it would mean a more consistent security presence...
