London,UK -Mirror.co.uk -13 Dec 2006: -- The "free-for-all" on the buses will end under the biggest shake-up for 20 years. Transport Secretary Douglas Alexander yesterday laid out plans to get more people on board by giving local authorities more say on timetables, fares and frequency. Commissioners would be able to hold operators and authorities to account. Mr Alexander said that passenger numbers had fallen in places since buses were deregulated in 1986 because "some areas have seen a free-for-all, with the needs of passengers being neglected".
