If service were - Canada - Most would pay more for public transit

Montreal,Quebec,Canada -The Montreal Gazette -Nov 08, 2006: -- A monthly pass to ride Montreal's buses and the metro cost $50 in 2002. La Presse reports that by next year, it likely will have increased to $65 - a 30-per-cent hike, far more than twice the rate of inflation over that period. The Agence metropolitaine de transport, which runs the commuter trains, is also set to announce rate hikes this month, adding to the 13.1-per-cent jump since January 2004 - and more for zone-two West Islanders... No one, however, would claim that mass-transit service has improved at that same breathless speed... If the transit agencies want more money, taxpayers have the right to expect corresponding improvements in the system...
