Accidents * USA - School bus injury reports up
The results provide a strong argument for requiring safety belts on school buses...
Chicago,Ill,USA -AP/San Jose Mercury News (CAL,USA) -Nov. 06, 2006: -- New national data show that school bus-related accidents send 17,000 children to emergency rooms each year... A new study appearing in the November issue of Pediatrics is the first to use a national sample. And that's allowed researchers to discover many more injuries than previously reported, because those estimates focused only on crashes. The reported injuries range from cuts and sprains to broken bones, but most are not life-threatening and don't require hospitalization... While the numbers are higher, they represent a small fraction of the more than 23 million children who travel on school buses nationwide each year... Doctor Gary Smith, the director of the Center for Injury Research and Policy at Children's Hospital in Columbus Ohio, and study co-author, says the results provide a strong argument for requing safety belts on school buses...
