* USA - School bus safety - Accident adds to discussion about seat belts
MARION,NC,USA -The Asheville Citizen-Times, by Adam Behsudi -Nov 18, 2006: -- So many screaming second-graders surrounded Misty Gilliland that she never saw what exactly happened to her son the day their school bus slipped off a road shoulder and crashed on its side... The accident last week sent all 54 Nebo Elementary School students on board to the hospital — her son with hand injuries that would force the amputation of two fingers... Gilliland said she isn’t convinced seat belts would have helped in her case, one that happened as the issue of using seat restraints on school buses has drawn debate nationwide...
* USA - Screeching halt to city school bus cuts
New York,NY,USA -The New York Daily News -18 Nov 2006: -- A judge yesterday put the brakes on the city's plan to alter school bus routes next month... Manhattan Supreme Court Judge Shirley Werner Kornreich temporarily barred the Education Department from moving ahead with its plan to cut 250 routes... School administrators will fight the decision at a hearing on Dec. 1 - just three days before the route changes are slated to take effect... The decision was cheered by Local 1181 of the Amalgamated Transit Union, which represents school bus drivers. The bus companies believe nearly 300 drivers could lose their jobs if the reorganization goes through...
