* USA - Portsmouth unveils plans to have hybrid buses downtown next year
Portsmouth,VA,USA -The Virginian Pilot, by JANIE BRYANT (Norfolk,VA) -Sept 28, 2006: -- The city plans to put two hybrid diesel-electric buses on the road next year to shuttle shoppers and visitors around the downtown area... The buses will be the first of their kind in the state, said George Brisbin, the city's senior transportation planner... The two buses would run simultaneously on opposite ends of a proposed loop along the High Street corridor and a stretch of the waterfront from the Telos Pavilion to an area outside the Naval Regional Medical Center...

* Australia - Fuel cell buses to stay on Perth’s streets
Perth,WA,Australia -Australasian Bus and Coach -1 Oct 2006: -- WA’s State Government's participation in the two-year trial of the clean, green technology will be extended by a further 12 months to reinforce the technology... The trial will hopefully help bring about the commercial production of these buses by 2010... The three hydrogen fuel cell buses, which had covered more than 160,000km and carried more than 200,000 passengers since the trial began in 2004, would continue to run on normal Transperth service routes. In only two years of operation, the three buses have prevented 272 tonnes of greenhouse gas emissions...

* UK - Household waste "could power London buses"
London,UK -letsrecycle.com (UK) -6 Oct 2006: -- A new report has suggested "real potential" for gasification plants and anaerobic digesters to turn London's household waste into hydrogen fuel... Launched yesterday by the London Hydrogen Partnership, a group established by Mayor Ken Livingstone, the report said new waste treatment technologies could generate 141 tonnes of hydrogen every day by 2020. Enough hydrogen to fuel all of London's buses could be created by 2020 from waste treatment plants, the report said... Both gasification and anaerobic digestion involve the treatment of waste in limited amounts of oxygen, a process which generates a "syngas" that can be turned into hydrogen... * UK - Electric buses see rise in passenger numbers
Weybridge,UK -Environmental Transport Association -2 Oct 2006: -- Passenger numbers on a Newcastle to Gateshead bus service which uses hybrid electric vehicles have more than doubled over the past year, it has been revealed... Tyne and Wear transport operator Nexus said the number of people using the QuayLink service had jumped by 53 per cent over the past twelve months, with around half a million people having used the bus link during its first year of operation.... Commenting on the increasing popularity of the QuayLink service, which cost £8 million to set up, Nexus director general Bernard Garner said: "The big yellow QuayLink buses are showing their value as more and more people use them."...
